Ok, so for once the cougars have a very, very good problem. And that is, what to do with the beast we know as Michael Loyd?

First thing to clarify though, is that no, I do not think I am getting ahead of myself or that Loyd is unproven. I realize it was only 2 games, but they were 2 SICK games. One against the best team we've played all year. And the other against our biggest rival. So perhaps against other teams he could do much more than that. Also, he's showed promise in the past.

My Proposal

Start Loyd over Haws. Have Loyd run the point, and Jimmer be the 2 (that part isn't really all that original, it has been mentioned, but the question was who to take out? And I say Haws). I can't believe I'm typing it, because I love Haws and he has had moments of being my favorite player on the team, but hear out my reasoning.

Thing is, Haws has been struggling a bit lately. He's really only got going near the end of games, especially from the charity stripe. So what if we pull a Tav, and bring Haws off the bench? Then he gets going off the bench and late, like he is already anyway. IMO, this fixes 2 problems. 1. Involving Loyd. 2. Helping Haws get his groove back. Furthermore, I just really love Loyd's D. You can see the overall effect it has. Haws D isn't horrible, not as bad as Jimmer's that's for sure, but it's no Loyd either.

If rose did it, I'd love it. Although, Loyd has been playing pretty well coming off the bench. Could mess up the whole chemistry of the team with this sort of change this late in the year.

I think people react a bit too fast in these situations. Someone pointed out to me that half the reason that Haws's game has been down lately is that whereas teams weren't scheming for him at the beginning of the season, especially in the non-conference games, they were now and it has showed. I think great players eventually rise above that and he will too, but who do you think has been scheming with Lloyd in mind? I don't think anyone was, but they sure will from this time going forward.

I really loved it later in the game where we have both Lloyd and Fredette in.

It's dang hard to scheme for everyone and that's the beauty of this team is that you can have several people go off on a particular night. We are so multi-dimensional that it's crazy.

Agree that Mike needs to be on the court a lot more, but i think Rose will feel that that's doable through the rotation, without upsetting the chemistry as noted above.Jackson has shown tendancy to sometimes get into foul trouble, and the really great thing about Mike's emergence now is that it gives the coach another fantastic option off the bench, which could be huge in the tourney. Also while we all assume that Jimmer gets his groove back,it's not a given at this point in the season.Kinda reminds me of the Brad Lidge deal with the Phillies this year, where he was at his worst just when the Phillies needed him most.Point is you can never know about the psyche of an athlete when things go a liitle bit wrong.

I don't know how effective it would be to have 3 guards in at a time, but it could be very interesting. Haws isn't a great defender and he's a decent rebounder. He's really only starting because he's a shooter, but he's been struggling pretty good. In the last 8 games he's 22 for 66 for 33% shooting and the previous 8 games he went 39 for 71 for 54% shooting. I'm not sure what happened but I personally think he'd be better suited coming off the bench. Although Abouo isn't a great shooter (he's shooting 38% over the last 8 games) he is a much better defender and rebounder. Abouo is the best rebounder we have statistically speaking. He easily has the most boards per minute.

One thing is sure to me and that's that Haws needs to play a lot less minutes and Loyd, Davies, and Abouo need to play more. Our three most athletic players at G,F, and C are only playing 12 min a game each. Jimmer could also sit two more minutes per game and we'd be fine.

Haws hasn't been taking as good of shots and has been missing a lot of open ones. If I were Rose I'd try starting Abouo vs TCU to see what happens and if it looks good then keep it or I would bring in Abouo a lot earlier. Either way we need to get him more minutes especially vs the more athletic teams. Oddly enough Abouo has been making a better percentage of shots than Haws the last 8 games and I love his upside even though he looks lost in the offense at times.

I think it's a great idea. Ya don't even need to try to force them into a strictly 1 or 2 role. I know Kentucky is doing really well right now with two point guards starting. Of course one controls the offense but to have two guys on the floor who can take it to the hoop or dish it out creates all kind of match up problems and is very hard to scheme. I have no problems with Haws either but we are really running a 3 guard offense so it really doesn't matter who is rotating out of the 3 position. There are just a lot of options and looks that Rose has now with Loyd.

Go Cougs!

Does anyone have a good explanation as to why Abouo only played 8 min and Haws played 36 min going 5 for 13 and only 1 rebound? That kinda makes me mad. I know Abouo had some fouls, but who cares when he only plays 12 min a game? We need him in there a lot more for us to go far in the tourney, IMO.

I think Haws is out of gas. His scoring and overall play is a lot diminished from what is was the first half of the season. I too wish Charles was seeing more minutes on the floor just so Haws can get some needed rest.

Um, aren't Fredette, Emery, and Haws all guards? Because they've started all year.

And it always seems like teams starting 3 quick, fast, scoring guards have traditionally done very well in March Madness- teams like Kansas.

For some reason I was think Haws was a F since he plays the three, but thanks for the correction.

Haws and Abouo play big, but both of them are only 6'5".

Haws tends to tear it up in the 1st ten minutes of a game and then disappear a bit.

Depending on who we're playing, I'd rather have Abuou in for Haws. However, a front line of Jimmer, Loyd and Emery would be fun to watch and I think we could pull it off against smaller teams, like UNLV. I don't think it would work against teams strong at the forward position. Since we basically only have two PGs right now, I doubt we'll see such a line. I'm all in favor of more minutes for Loyd and Abuou, though.

Abouo does have the most, just not by very much:

"Abouo leads the Cougars with 0.25 rebounds per minute. He is followed by Davies (0.22), Noah Hartsock (0.21), Miles (0.20), Jonathan Tavernari (0.19) and Jackson Emery (0.19). Abouo is also tied with Miles for third on the team with 32 offensive rebounds (Haws is first with 45 and Hartsock second with 44)."
