Q
QuarterbackUI'm new here so I'm not sure how many threads there are regarding this topic...probably at least 10 but I'm not going to rummage through the old posts. Here is my take:
Starting Riley could be a big mistake for BYU. If Riley is better prepared than Heaps at the start of the season, the benefit of starting him over Heaps could possibly be one game. Even if you were to start the weakest of all of our QBs lets say that is Munns or Lark, we would most likely still go 7-5 next year, right? I would guess that the difference between a lesser prepared Lark/Munns verses a better prepared Nelson/Heaps is maybe 1-2 games. We go to a bowl game either way. So if Nelson is better you still don't start him because you only benefit one game, if that.
In addition, even if Heaps is not as prepared as Riley at the start of the season, I would bet that Heaps is going to progress very quickly. I think it will be a similar scenario to what you saw at Utah last year. The true freshman (Winn) wasn't ready at the start of the season but as the season went on, it was clear to the Ute Coaches that Jordan Winn was the real deal and future and they didn't want to waste anymore time on Cain. BYU shouldn't waste time on Riley Nelson for the same reason. Utah would have been much better off last year and this coming year starting Winn from the beginning. Sure they may have dropped another game early on but at the same time, they may have knocked BYU off at home had Jordan Winn had a bit more experience and reps (especially on the deep ball).
I would rather have a year like USC and Utah did last year and then emerge with a guaranteed 3 years left for Heaps, than red shirt Heaps and risk losing him Ben Olsen style.
In addition, not starting Heaps will definitely be a detrimental to BYUâs ability to recruit future top 100 recruits. If youâre going to ride the pine wood pony, why not ride it in style at Texas, USC, Cal, or Miami? A top 100 recruit with eighty-nine offers from BCS schools does not come to BYU so they can sit the bench and not be seen on TV by their mom and dad and spend their winters in the bitter cold. They come to BYU to play now.
Also wanted to know your thoughts on this idea. I've heard people say that they believe they knew Riley would not start when Harvey Unga decided to stay. Their theory is that Harvey would not be staying if Riley were QB because Harvey needs the assurance that his draft stock will not drop by staying and that means he needs equal or more carries and wants to be in the same offensive system he has been in the last few years. They say he most likely was given some assurances that the offensive scheme will not be changing at all. Anae said himself that he will not be changing the offensive scheme for next year. If Riley were to start, you could not maintain the same scheme weâve had since 2005. It would have to morph and it would take too much time and effort and could very well cost us wins this year.
Last but not least, I think if you sit Heaps on the bench there are going to be some key recruits who Heaps has recruited/mentored, who are going to be pretty upset and I don't think you can guarantee they will stay if Riley Nelson is the quarterback the next two years.
It would be a perfect world if Jake Heaps were to red shirt, go on a mission and then give us 4 years of National Championship hopes but it is much too big of a risk for our program. We have very little to gain by starting Nelson even if Nelson is the better QB at the start of the season.
Alright Iâm ready for my beating! Let me know your thoughtsâ¦. :)
