Pac 14

In reading the comments of the Tucson newspaper article with the poll on which colleges should be added to the Pac 10 there was an interesting rumor I hadn't heard before. An internet poster (claiming to be privy to insider conversations...I know, I know) brings up something I hadn't heard before with the Pac 10 expanding by 4 colleges. It would bring in Utah, BYU, Colorado, and Air Force.

Maybe BYU would have a chance in this scenario as the impact of the mormon school coming in would be "watered down" with the 3 other new teams.

It's an interesting thought, though very unlikely unless the Big Ten goes to 14 teams. As much as I like Air Force, it would seem to me that Colorado State would be a better long-term choice for the Pac 10. In fact, 10 years ago CU and CSU would have been a very logical choice for the Pac 10. The Rams were playing smash-mouth football and were playing decent basketball.

Big XII is going BIG XIV, I could see the Big 10, going the Bigger 14.

This may be the way the BCS stays in power. BYU and Utah to the Pac 14. Boise State and TCU to the Big 14. Houston, Tulsa, and East Carolina to the other Big 14. The Big East could probably pick up Central Florida, Marshall, Central Michigan (or fill in the blank crappy C-USA team).

The MWC and WAC combine and you have Fresno State as the only remaining "respected" non-BCS school.

Anyone that doesn't know how to spell damn doesn't know much in my book. This sounds just like another of the many speculative articles. I'm a bit shocked though that Utah at this point would have garnered 51% of the vote. Personally, and I'm just a bit Utah (State of) biased since I live here, but it just seems like outside of the BCS conferences, there are no other teams in the country to would seem like the most likely based on the criteria of successful programs beyond just FB and BB (olympic sports).

I just keep wondering why, except for just using it as an excuse, why the Sunday play is that big of a deal. We have teams in the MWC that play on Sundays and being in a conference with them has never been an issue. Does the PAC10 currently have any of their championship tournaments scheduled for Sunday in some of their sports?

I was of the belief that we (BYU/Utah/TCU) should just all stay in the MWC and await to become an AQ. I have said all along that I doubt the possibility that the BCS will ever allow that to happen and that they will change something. Yesterday I was listening to the Jim Rome show and they were talking about the invitation that has been mentioned the Big Ten made to Texas and there is talk of Nebraska. It was mentioned that they could be moving to what they called "super conferences", where if they did, it might rewrite the BCS altogether and create another entity where they major conferences would again reform and do away with the BCS and so while we were tracking to qualify, there might not be a BCS when we got to that point.

I just beleive that we are heading toward a point where the current BCS conferences will be forced to do something they don't want to and they will try to find a way out. That's why the BCS was created in the first place. Why do we think that suddenly, unless forced to do so (legally), that these conferences are going to be the good guys and give up their pieces of the pie?

One other comment about the article cited.

When the PAC10 expanded the last time, they took schools that had been successful. In his poll he just threw in west-coast teams because they are on the west coast (UNLV, San Jose St, etc.). That doesn't even make sense beyond trying to fill in a sports news/discussion topic in some paper or website. His lips were just a flappin.

I looked into this Sunday play topic. Womens basketball, Mens and Womens tennis and Track and Field all have tournament events on Sunday.

So 5 sports that do have a tournament on Sunday. (Mens counting as 1. Womens counting as 1.)

17 sports that do not have a tournament on Sunday.

So I honestly could see that as being an issue. I just don't know for them that changing the way they do things, even though that isn't a huge change, is worth it to the conference. Yes, BYU is the strongest non-BCS program out there. We qualify in everything they would want in a conference partner except for that issue and it would have to be looked at and decided if that outweighs the benefit it would be to go in that direction if they expanded. I don't personally think they will and it's just something we are going to have to deal with.

I just went and checked the Big 12 Conference about Sunday tournaments. For this school year they had sports championships in:

soccer

women's basketball

men's golf

women's golf

men's tennis

women's tennis

softball

men's track & field

women's track & field

baseball

that have Sunday portions of the championship.

I think we're screwed as far as having the opportunity of joining the PAC10 or Big 12 conferences. Is any naive enough to believe that our value as an addition to their conference really outweighs these conferences having to change the way they do things?

Would it be that hard to plan to shift a championship or game ONE day IF BYU got in? I see it as a stupid excuse more than an actual problem.

Well, tournaments certainly don't need to be on Sunday, that's just the "way of the world" to put everything on Sunday, since nobody goes to church anymore, and Sunday is just another play (money) day.

But to the point, no, I don't think any of these conferences are going to eliminate Sunday championship play, or willingly just change their sports schedules to accommodate BYU. I'll believe this invitation when I see it.

Ain't going to happen.

Trying to sell the idea that the Big Ten and the PAC-10 will expand is far enough out there for me. I don't think either will.

Trying to sell the idea that ANY power conference is going past 12 schools though, that's just insulting. 13+ would be a total logistical NIGHTMARE- You tell me how the conference scheduling would work. It wouldn't. Though the Big Ten/Eleven has been screwy long enough that they just might consider it for a second before returning their senses.

I'd still rather see the MWC expand, ie add Boise State, and stick it to the other BCS conferences financially when we get an auto-bid

Can someone tell me why the WAC 16 did not work? Was it scheduling problems or teams not playing their rival? What would happen if the MWC went to a true East division with 16 teams? Woudl they be able to get more tv sets to justify the expansion, get a good?!? championship game? And secure a BCS bid. Could we prempt some of the other conferences?

Teams that could be added are Navy, East Carolina, Houston, Central Florida, Southern Miss and of course BSU.

Well in that case, we as church members are just going to have to change. I've got a second cousin who has an old university roomate who sends and receives an annual Christmas card to President Monson. I'll see if I can't start the lobbying process. I'm sure Pres. Monson wouldnt mind changing a few minor policies for a good cause like this.

The big announcement may be coming in April's General Conference. I'll see what I can do.

Why don't we just have a church wide policy that the Sabbath day is the 7th day of the week on weekends when there is a Sunday sports conflict for BYU. Does it really matter which day we worship? I think Jesus used to go to church on Saturday. Besides, maybe then my wife will start believing me when I tell her the Sabbath is over at sundown. ;)

The enormous WAC failed for many reasons:

(1) Large geographic footprint caused high travel costs.

(2) The core of the old WAC--BYU, Utah, Wyoming, New Mexico, Colorado State, Air Force, UTEP, and SDSU-- were split up, so it was it was hard to generate a buzz around conference games. Attendance suffered as a result.

(3) Despite having some great bowls inviting WAC teams, dividing the earnings by 16 saw less revenue per team than in the 9/10 team WAC. The WAC champ was tied to the Cotton or Holiday Bowl, and WAC teams made appearances in the Liberty, Sun, Copper/Insight, Oahu, and Las Vegas Bowls. Now the Cotton, Holiday, Sun, and Insight Bowls barely give MWC teams the time of day.

The WAC failed because it was full of small teams with little fan following in small markets with little TV viewership.

The mega-WAC failed because it was totally LAME. Who wants to watch BYU play San Jose State?

(of course, by the same token, who wants to watch BYU play New Mexico? Does that mean that the MWC is also totally lame, and is doomed to fail).

I want to re-invent the "BYU for INDEPENDENT" movement!

Especially is the :utard: gets invited to the Pac 0 without us.

A bunch of schools that have tiny markets or don't come close to owning their own market with terrible fan support like TCU, Houston, UNLV, SDSU, CSU, and Wyoming.
