Have we seen anyone cancel their return trip to Provo yet? I cannot think of any. I don't think that the Stanford Athletic Dept has sooooo much cash laying around that they'll buy out three games.

Hopefully Stanford is more honorable to it's commitments than say ... Notre Dame

Its a nice addition. True that the first half of both 4-game series is @ Stanford--but those are Thanksgiving weekend games each of those 4 years. And it is tough to get road OOC games with Stanford since most of the time they are on the road 1 time OOC per year and have games already lined up. With the timing of the games being 2025, 2026, 2028, 2029, and 2031--it makes me believe that the Stanford/Notre Dame series may be coming to an end (their last scheduled matchup is 2024 and they already have H/H series scheduled with Boston College and what looks like a 2 for 1 with Vanderbilt beyond 2024).

Notre Dame still owes BYU several home games that while not cancelled are permanently postponed.

Not true. Only 1 game @ Provo is owed and was not expected to be scheduled (if at all) before 2020.

At his semi-annual roundtable discussion with reporters, Tom Holmoe stated that the second two-for-one series is “off the table” and that he will be “patient” for the Irish to return the game that is owed.

“I would say that the second two-for-one series is off the table. We do definitely need to clear up the first contract. Notre Dame had a schedule agreement with the ACC and it was a great opportunity for them. To think that they joined a conference out of football was a big thing. And so for them to do that changed things and that can happen for us. So I would really be hypocritical to think that I’d hold them to the fire for doing something that’s really good for them. But we’ve played them twice out there, and they need to return this game. But the second series of three games, I understand that.”

Really? I’ll tell you what’s funny... not being skeptical of this deal. Really.

Didn't we see speculation that Michigan State and Missouri each would cancel their return trips? And here we are with them both coming to Provo this year. The level of paranoia about canceling return trips is actually very funny (but not as funny as the one about the three-legged dog walking into the bar and saying "I'm looking for the feller that shot my pa")

The gap in time before the last 2 games and weird front loading on this deal begs for questions.

If we did this type of deal with, say, Utah, I would think 90% of the fans would be up in arms. I just want BYU to be seen as an equal in negotiations and to not be pushed around and to cave to other teams demands. Now, if the deal was, if you give us some Nov games we'll give you the home games up front, then that could be a sound negotiation. But if these games come with a very low buyout or some weak clause for Stanford to get out of the back games then I would be pisssed.



While it's fun playing all of these different teams, I really want to be in a conference again. The right conference. Not the MWC.

That’s a good breakdown. I don’t hate the deal, but I’m skeptical of it. Obviously BYU can’t do too many deals like this. The November games are what made it appealing I’m sure.



I’m sure BYU tried to get some home games in between, but if that was all Stanford was offering I’d take it too, but I’d want more than a 1 million dollar buyout for more than 1 game (meaning, if they want to buyout 1 I’d live with 1 million). If Stanford wants to buy out 2 games hopefully the contract gets very nasty.

Remember Stanford plays in the PAC 12, their network has lousy distribution. Stanford is NOT going to cancel an ESPN game.

15 years though. Hyper inflation might make the buyout less than a loaf of bread and ESPN might be out of business. Who knows what the world will look like then, we only know we can’t guess. In 2005 we had no idea what CFB would be like in 2020.



There is risk in this deal and BYU is the one carrying all of it. I hope they protected themselves. The ND deal is proof of that.



I’m not hating the deal, just not turning cartwheels and the devil is in the details. BYU hasn’t done the best job managing those kinds of details in the past lol.

Nothing risked, nothing gained. I think the risk of having a game bought out 15 years down the road is worth playing Thanksgiving weekend games that matter--at least to an indy BYU and is hopefully a featured game on the PAC12 media schedule. The wait to get Stanford @ home on ESPN will be worth the coverage too compared to some of the November games we've had to settle for.
