FidoI was going through some stats based on comments on a MWC board and was pretty blown away by them.
BYU's record in independence against teams currently in the MWC:
22-13
That doesn't sound too overly impressive--until you look a layer down from those numbers.
BYU vs MWC teams who had 10 or more wins in the season in which they played: 2-11 (wins were against 11-2 Utah State in 2012 and 12-2 Boise State in 2019).
BYU vs MWC teams who had a winning record with 9 or fewer wins in the season in which they played: 8-1 (loss was to 7-6 Nevada in 2014)
BYU vs MWC teams who had a .500 or worse record in the season in which they played: 12-1 (the one loss going to Utah State who finished 6-7 but beat BYU in 2017)
***Notice that over the decade of independence, BYU has faced as many 10-or-more-win MWC teams as they have faced 6-or-less-win MWC teams and win 91% (20-2) of the time when their opponent finished that season with less than 10 wins.
It would be interesting to see if someone took the time to look over BYU vs other G5s and see what they look like. It sure doesn't seem to be our old conference mates that give us trouble unless they are a legitimately good team that year.
