SDSU Takeaways

SDSU had three actually, ha ha, but that is not what this post is about.

1. The OLine got beat. Whether It was in the rushing game or the pass game, they got beat.

2. Sitaki was not animated, motivating or cheering the team on, at least from the sidelines as I could see from the television. That is a stark contrast from the previous games where he was much more a motivator.

3. I am no expert, but it almost seems as if Wilson needs the game to slow down for him so he can make better reads. This loss is not on him. When you don’t have a running game, they tee off on the quarterback. He did have some very bad passes, but he actually had some that wwere good as well.

4. The defense played more than well enough for the team to have won. But one glaring deficiency is an effective pass rush. We did blitz and it made no difference.

5. Special teams has turned into a dumpster fire. Fumbled punts, never even returning punts, missed field goals, are mistakes that do not help the team that needs everything clicking to do well

My take aways.



BYU can beat anyone, they have the talent, but only if they work hard and prepare.



BYU can lose to anyone, especially when they don't prepare, practice half days, don't go hard, etc.

Reports that the team didn't work as hard or that they weren't prepared for SDSU (not sure what's true and what is misrepresented) have me thinking that our coaches have the biggest problem of all: the inability to learn from mistakes. Earlier in the season after the USF loss, the team changed the intensity of their practices and preparation, and it showed in the way they played against BSU. To make that realization and then discard it as anything other than a valuable learning opportunity tells me that we should not expect any practical improvement from this team in the future, only random wins and losses like we've been seeing.

It's been evident for a while now that the coaching staff is undisciplined, even lazy at times. Players play as they are coached. This, more than anything else, explains the inconsistency. But, hey, why not give Sitake three more years since he beat Utah State and Boise State. We set the bar high at BYU.

The evidence would suggest Kalani is only motivated to reach his fullest potential when his job is on the line. Get ready for more of the same.

Yeah I just don't get #2. As much as I loved Bronco I hated his constipated look on the sidelines. If Sitake is going to be the anti-Bronco then he needs to always be that full energy motivator. Because he is not an Xs and Os guy. So without his passion he is not bringing anything to the team really...

Boise State only has one loss, BYU, and yet they couldn't get it together to beat SDSU? Boise State is ranked 17 and 19 and Southern Cal is 24.

I'm not sure what to take away from the SDSU game besides inconsistency. I'm still not sold that we have some vocal strong leaders on the team from a players perspective. Many of the seniors are either not the best at their positions or are not very outspoken. I'm not sure how much they are holding each other accountable for doing what they should be doing--especially on offense--and especially on the offensive line. I'm hoping that changes as players mature in the program and approach their senior year. I'd have to review the list of upper classmen who will be sticking around and see who there might emerge as a strong vocal leader who can do some of this motivating that the team seems to rely on the coaching staff to do week in and week out.

I'm just going to accept that, under Kalani Sitake, BYU football will just always be the Baby Face Nelson of college football. Running white hot or ice cold.
