Kalani must win out.

I don't see how Kalani can be extended. Maybe he's not fired at the end of the season and returns for next year, but I can't see how he can be extended on anything less than a 7-0 finish to the season.



He's not earned it. Over the last 31 games, his longest winning streak is two games. And he's only done that three times. He's just not good enough.



Maybe BYU is too cheap to buy him out. But if they're not going to fire him, then they need to similarly cheap and not commit and more money to him.

He seems like a great guy and a players coach.



He seems like a great asset to a coaching staff with a traditional, hard driving details oriented head coach.



I’m not sure who if anybody on the staff I’d hope to stay.



If BYU isn’t going to pay for successful experienced coordinators, it’s probably going to be more of the same. I’ll just have to hope they get lucky.

A guess a players coach is one way to put it. He's buddy buddy with the players and tries to be their best friends when what most of them need is probably more of a father figure.

Yeah. I don’t think that he fits the profile of what’s expected for a head coach for a reason. I get the impression even a coordinator wouldn’t be a great fit unless the head coach was an involved defensive guy.

9-3 is the minimum for extending? I think I’d perhaps extend at 9-4..... I might at 8-5 if my intelligence suggests there’s no one who stands out as an upgrade. Just ask Nebraska. That said, I don’t think we do anything better than 7-6. At least as I’m seeing things now....

Although, my daughter and I are loving the women's soccer team this year. If you want to watch a group of winners, that's a fun team to watch. They're relentless.

Guys I was against this hire from the beginning but I had hoped Kalani would succeed. I have grown to love the guy because he is genuine and sincerely a good guy. Having said that, he is a poor head coach and should not be the Head coach at BYU. I'm sorry for that because BYU is his dream job and he has failed at it. Like I have posted in other threads, BYU needs to move on from this hire and open up the position to more than just temple recommend holding Mormons because the only coach that is good enough for BYU with those qualifications is the Head Coach at Virginia.

You and I might be 2 of only a handful of people that want to see BYU grow and expand past this unwritten rule. It's time for BYU to change. Does BYU want to grow and expand or are they happy with 6-6 seasons with an occasional 8-4 season? Because the receipt they are currently using is good for .500 but not much more.

CougarCorner has always strived to be a place where no one is banned for having an opinion that is unpopular, but does not tolerate racism, threats of violence, or any form of personal attacks. However, Tom Holmoe will not require that Sitake win out. He will not fire Sitake unless there is a meltdown and we finish 5-7 or worse. I wish more was expected from BYU's football program, but I do not believe it is. As long as Sitake gets us to a bowl game, he is safe. It would be nice to beat Boise State or Utah State, but I don't think his job depends on it.



As fans, we expect at least 8 wins and to beat our rivals. But the reality is that we vastly overestimate what we have and what is required. We've lost to UMass, Northern Illinois, and Toledo in consecutive seasons now. But, don't underestimate how much goodwill you can earn with wins over Wisconsin and USC.

Probably true. They would probably just not give him an extension if they are unhappy.

On the main topic: I have no idea what the powers that be believe must happen in order for Kalani to keep his job, but I hope we do win out! Might as well hope instead of focus on the negative what ifs. I’m not convinced that getting rid of Kalani will mean better results anyway. Just my two cents.

Remember, we're talking about a guy (Holmoe) who's favorite part of last season was BYU leading Utah at halftime.

8-5 this year is fine for me. Toledo is probably going to win 9 games or more. Go look at BYU history to see how many times BYU went on the road to beat teams good enough to win 9 or more games. Zero wins in the last decade. 3 wins in the last 20 years. 5 wins in the last 30 years. Losing to Toledo is like losing to Air Force. It shouldn't happen very often but it does happen.

Those are some sad stats. And, if memory serves, when we have beaten a 9+ win team, it's almost always been the years we've had a senior QB.

BUT, I don't think the options are as slim as you guys think ... Anderson is still available, Bevel MIGHT be able to be lured away from Detroit, AND I think there are others out there. Look to FCS level, and there are probably several HC's who qualify and are proven, step to DII and there are probably more (although the difference between DII and DI is humongous ...).



The flip side of that is: the search committee is already telling the admin there aren't many choices and so we need to stay with KS.
