3 and outs

Can anyone remember the BYU defense getting a 3 and out this year? I'm not talking about getting a turnover. I want to know if the defense has gotten off the field by not letting the opposing team get a 1st down on a drive?

Yes--a quick review of the play by plays of the first 4 games show they have 4 3-and-outs in the first 4 games--only failing to get one against Washington.

Well, now I know why I didn't remember. 4 in 4 games is ridiculously pathetic. They should be getting around 4 per game, if not more. This ridiculously pathetic defense didn't get a punt in the WA game until 11:11 left in the 4th quarter.

Is it? Where does the "4 or more 3-and-outs/game = acceptable" come from?



First, BYU has averaged 12 defensive series' per game in 2019. So you are saying that 25% or more of the time the defense takes the field they need to go 3-and-out in order to not be "ridiculously pathetic".



Let's look at Utah who is supposed to have one of the best defenses around this year. How many times do you think they have 4 3-and-out's in a single game?



Answer: 1 - Against Idaho State.



BYU - 1 3-and-out with 2 turnovers in less than 4 downs

No Ill - 3 3-and-out with 1 turnover in less than 4 downs

Id St - 4 3-and-out with 1 turnover in less than 4 downs

USC - 3 3-and-out with 1 turnover in less than 4 downs.



That is an average of just under 3 3-and-outs/game since we weren't counting turnovers. Just saying...

Well 4 is a pretty literal number and taken from the number of total 3 and outs that BYU has gotten over the entire season. So you are right, BYU probably shouldn't be averaging 4 3 and outs per game but I do know that they shouldn't be giving up long touchdown drives on the first drive of the game, which they have done in every game with the exception of the utah game, putting the offense in a hole. They shouldn't be giving up 14 play 9 minute scoring drives like they have been. They should be forcing more than 1 punt in a game, especially like in the WA game when we didn't see the wa punter until 11:11 left in the 4th quarter. This defense is bad, it is bad in every way, scoring, yards given up, just bad. Tuiaki is a bad defensive coordinator. Yes Bronco used to give up yards but his defenses knew how to get teams off the field and give his offenses a chance to score. We used to force teams to punt and did it a lot. This team has to get a turnover to get offenses off the field because they can't figure out how to get a stop on 3rd and, pretty much, any distance.
