Big 10 + Texas?

Some reports are starting to come out that the BigTelevEN have made some initial inquiries to Texas about joining.



How does that shake things up for us in possible scenarios?

I assume that would be bad for us. If they lose a Texas school it would be more likely (in my opinion) that the Big 12 would take TCU to replace them. I think if Colorado or Missouri leaves then we have a much better chance at getting the invite to the Big 12.

What's the incentive for Texas accepting such an invitation?



Other than becoming the obvious favorite year in and year out.

Texas has a sweetheart deal with the Big 12... the entire reason Missouri wants out is that the revenue sharing is not equal and Texas gets a greater % than Mizzou and other schools.



If anything, this is Texas posturing so that the Big 12 leaves their money situation alone.



Utimately these moves all come down to money; which is why BYU will always be considered. They fill stands and seats, and they have a national following.



If Utah (who does not have a strong following) were to bail unilaterally without BYU, the Pac 10, etc. would try to do the same thing that the Big 12 has done to Missouri. They would ask them to take a lesser deal and allow the USCs of the world to stay the big boy. At the beginning, inclusion seems so nice you forgive the inequality, but eventually it seems unfair (which is where Missouri's at with the Big 12)



The one thing that the Big 10 has over the other conferences, is the best TV package in the country, and there's no doubt that's appealling to anyone that the Big 10 would covet and recruit.

Mark this down: The chances that you'll see Texas in the Big Ten is about the same as Washington in the MWC. It's just not going to happen. Texas isn't going anywhere.

There is no reason in the world why Texas would want to leave the Big 12. They are contenders in the Big 12 year in and year out. I can totally see why the Big 10 would want Texas, heck the MWC wants Texas, that doesn't mean it's going to happen.

Craig is right on here. Texas is going nowhere. But they want to make sure the Big XII knows they are the top dog and it will stay that way... or else!



Half of Texas' away schedule each year is less than 500 miles away from Austin. Moving to the Big 11 would double and triple that. And while the Big XII TV contracts aren't as good as the Big 11's or the SEC's right now, you know it won't stay that way for long. The general population growth is moving west to Texas and the Mountain States. Plus if they abandoned the Big XII, they would be able to play both Texas A&M and OU, their two biggest rivals, every year.

Yeah, what he said. Its not going to happen. And even if Utah went to he pac10 its not going to help them that much in my opinion. It didn't help Arizona or Arizona State. It arguably hurt them.

While I do not think that it will materialize, those of you who say that there in no way that Texas will leave for the Big 10 simply are not looking at the financial structure of college football.



Texas in indeed the big money draw in the Big 12 and that is because of a TV financial structure where moneys are not shared equally. Nevertheless, the Big 10 shared a payout, per team, of 22 million dollars for their TV contracts last year. If the State of Texas were added to that equation, the number could be simply staggering. I am certain that it will at least give the Longhorn administration some pause if they are offically invited.



Keeping with financial considerations in mind, it would be far more accurate to say that there is no way that Texas will ever join the PAC 10.



If Texas were to leave for the BIg 10, the college football landscape would be rocked to its core. The face of the Big 12 could be seriously altered with aftershocks felt in any number of conferences. Given a Texas departure, the remaining Big 12 teams would likely have to do some serious accounting and possibly restructure the entire conference.



My hope is that BYU can find its way into a new Big 12 conference. I don't see Texas ultimately leaving, so the most likely potential departures are in Colorado and Missouri, per the rumor mill.



At the very least, BYU and its athletic department needs to be poised and extremely proactive on these issues. If Utah and TCU were to leave the conference and BYU is left holding the bag, the results could be devastating. Other than no chance in Hades of getting an automatic BCS bid, can you imagine the recruiting ramifications?! Picture BYU and Utah coaches each inviting a kid to play football with the Utes holding the BCS conference card. If BYU is left out, there better be no trace of it being because of BYU's complacency or some time honored allegiance to the MWC.

Word out of Austin in the local papers is that Texas has no intention of leaving the Big 12, and was listening simply out of courtesy. Makes no sense for them to jump at all.

I think the MWC should invite, USC, Texas, Florida, Oklahoma....you never know. One might just join... :crazy: :crazy:

All the talk radio here in Houston had couple of reoccuring themes.



Texas is already the profitable college football program in the nation.



While they could improve their TV money it is unlikely that Texas fan would continue to travel at the numbers they currently do. In the Big 10 their closest conference game would be 800 miles away.



They would probably lose some of their biggest games. Texas vs OU or Texas vs A&M.



Most of the people down here don't see anyway that could happen.
