BYU - Boise State extend scheduling agreement 10 years

The two schools announced on Tuesday that they have agreed to a new 10-year scheduling agreement from 2025 to 2034.



The first date of the new 10-year scheduling agreement is scheduled for October 25, 2025, in Boise. The following year, BYU will host Boise State on November 7, 2026, in Provo.



Eight of the 10 games to be played in September

One of the interesting aspects to this scheduling agreement is that eight of the 10 games will be played in the month of September.



Only two of BYU and Boise State’s meetings since 2012 have been played in the month of September.



Starting in 2027, the remaining 8 games of the new 10-game BYU-Boise St series will be played in the month of September each year.



Why does this matter? Around the year 2025 is when TV contracts are expected to expire for major Power Five conferences. Both BYU and Boise State are programs that have aspirations of launching their athletic departments into Power Five conferences.



Having the final eight games of this 10-game series scheduled for the month of September gives each athletic department the flexibility to still be able to play out the series but also not cause scheduling headaches if either team goes into a new league.

I think it could happen, it would just require every game at Notre Dame.

Getting a regular matchup scheduled with Notre Dame means nothing if Notre Dame doesn't actually honor the agreement.

Interesting that 2024 is a 1 year break in between the two long series. Also interesting the tidbit about from 2027 thru 2035, the games will be played sometime in September.



So does that mean they are anticipating being in a P5 league by then? Or does that mean they are giving up one of the first 4 weeks from being a P5 team and moving Boise State there?

I think they are planning on both teams being in p5 conferences.

I'm probably alone in this but, assuming Notre Dame would give us an annual match up and actually honor the agreement, I would probably agree to something like 5 for 1. As an independent, that's a key game we need. And playing in South Bend on NBC doesn't hurt.

Neither.



MWC teams are only allowed one scheduling request per year, i.e. they can only schedule one non-conference team during the conference slate each year. For a long-term deal like this, it doesn't make sense for BSU to use all of its requests through 2035 on one opponent. They would want to keep as many requests as possible open to allow for more flexibility in filling out its schedule moving forward. Part of other teams' dislike for BYU in the MWC came from the fact that BYU got General Conference Saturday off every year, plus got their request on top.



Rules like that are part of what makes Holmoe's job filling the schedule as an independent really really difficult.
