Kalani Sitake on coaching philosophy

Wait, what? Not fixed on the end result? As much as I loved Bronco, one of his biggest faults was treating the rivalry game just like any other game. Even Coach Rose would make certain comments about how beating Utah (and other in-state "rivals") was extra special. Am I reading too much into this? I want a coach who is all in on beating Utah!

If the "end result" against a rival is NOT key and NOT what you are focussed on, then expect a loss.



Maybe I"m completely wrong, but "end result" IS WHAT A HEAD COACH IS TO BE "FIXED" ON ... maybe the HC doesn't worry so much about many of the in-game decisions and calls, but EVERYTHING should be about "end result"

He will be judged by the results on the field regardless of what is said off the field. He obviously thinks that this mentality will end up with good results on the field or he wouldn’t be adopting it. If BYU wins, no one will care about this quote. If they lose, he will be let go, no matter what he said.

Sitake and Detmer never should have been brought on. Detmer especially.

So here's my complaint with Kalani's coaching philosophy. Recently there's been a guy on Twitter, who has been talking about his son, who plays at the University of Utah. This man, and his son, and his whole family grew up as huge BYU fans. He was recruited by both BYU and Utah. He chose Utah. That's fine, sometimes there's a lot of good reasons to do so. I have no issue with that at all. However, he says in his tweets how Kalani came into their house and told them that they really wanted their son to play at BYU, but if he chose to commit to Utah, that was okay because they have tremendous coaches, they have a great team, they play in a wonderful conference, etc. All of that may be true, in fact it is. But it's not Kalani's job to tell people how great Utah is. You don't have to say a single negative thing about Utah, just don't say anything at all!

My nephew happens to be one of the top middle linebackers in Utah, if not nationally. He has 4 brothers who played at BYU. Utah is recruiting him heavily, as are UCLA, CAL, Standford, Washington, and a host of also-rans.



BYU hasn't talked to him.



I don't think KS is the recruiting genius we thought ... (but I probably sound rather bitter too ...)

KS probably thinks, oh we'll never get him...why bother.



I want BYU to do well. Another part of me wants KS gone and for that to happen, BYU has to perform poorly.

When applying to graduate schools, I applied to one as a "safety" school but that was a plausible option for me as their offered a specialization in the field I was pursuing that is hard to find.



The dean of admissions called me during the application process with the attendance offer, and at the end of the call said, "realistically, we both know you are probably not coming here, so do you have any questions about any other schools I can answer for you?" and we had a straightforward conversation about his thoughts on the schools I was looking at, and in part due to his comments I ended up at Baylor. Because of that conversation, I have a good impression of that school.



But the only reason that conversation happened was we both knew I was not going to end up there at that point in my selection process.



I think that may be what happened with Kalani and the kid he recommended the Utah staff to--if everybody in the room knows that the visit is just an act of due diligence (whether it be because of Honor Code issues, academic qualifying issues, or just a plain preference for other suitors) rather than a genuine act of interest, it does no harm to weigh in on the other schools.

I liked the Detmer hire, in retrospect he wasn't ready. I still feel he was scapegoated. That 4-9 season had so many things wrong with it that firing the offensive staff was a total scapegoat. They should have all been fired starting with the head coach. In the long run, I am agreeing with you.
