Yoeli Child's suspended for 9 games for paperwork snafu

"Paperwork snafu” = hiring an agent before notifying the NCAA that he was doing so, but wanted to leave the door open to return to college hoops.



In a couple years, they'll be telling guys they have lost amateur status for your same "snafu"--he's lucky to be just missing 9 games.

The previous staff, BYU's athletic admin, and the agent he hired dropped the ball. And Yeoli did as well.



Even if Yeoli was fully convinced he wasn't coming back, he should have made sure he was doing it right, just in case he changed his mind.

BYU's athletic admin should have helped an athlete leaving school early was doing everything, just in case they changed their mind.



His agent should have made sure he left the door open to return, just in case he changed his mind. This is a poor agent.



Yeoli, should be looking for a new agent the next time he's looking to hire an agent. Because that agent was not looking out for his client, but looking out for himself.

Hell, I'm just glad we get him back for conference. I hit KSL for a brief moment on the way home from work today and the announcer, with out giving any specifics, said BYU MBB got very bad news today concerning Yoeli. I thought his leg got snapped in two or he was gone for good. From that perspective, this was not so bad.

Honestly, there is a lot of truth in that statement. Can anyone remember any incident involving BYU were someone from the outside could say what we feel about these other programs that seem to have committed much more grave errors and they don't seem to feel the pain?

FWIW, I understand what the NCAA is doing here.



Yoeli is in the unfortunate circumstance of being the public demonstration. The NCAA is unhappy about being coerced into letting players test the waters of the NBA and still come back.



The Yoeli penalty is not about matching the penalty to the crime -- it's about sending a message to all the other players from this point forward who may want to test the waters. If you're going to do it, do it carefully and exactly right. Don't play games and think you can change your mind down the road--decide early in the process if you want to comeback and subject yourself to NCAA oversight of the process if you want to keep the door to return open.



Add to that the fact that BYU Hoops is on the NCAA-shiz list right now for the games they tried to play with the Emery violations -- letting a kid withdraw from school for the duration of the investigation (meaning he was outside of NCAA jurisdiction and did not have to cooperate at all with that investigation) and then welcoming him back with a slap on the wrist after the investigation was concluded.



Sucks for Yoe, but I get it from the NCAA's perspective. You want to make an example of someone, and the kid from the school that tried to pull one over on you makes an attractive target.

And you can use a kid from a school that you know won't make a big stink at the punishment that is levied.

I hope the corrupt NCAA gets sued for some scandall (the NCAA itself not a school) for billions of dollars. I really can't stand the organization. They make billions of dollars off of these student athletes and they treat them like this? This was the first year of this rule change. How about some leniancy? It's not like he was purposely trying to circumvent any rules.



You know how some people hate proffesional sports because it's all about the money? The NCAA is just as corrupt and about money/power than any professional league in the world and perhaps more so.

Is it too late for BYU to add more games to their schedule to ensure that Utah is the 10th game of the year?

No, in a couple of years maybe they'll find themselves not governing anything, as member schools bolt to form a new governing body. It's been talked about before. Maybe not 2 years, but it's only a matter of time if they keep acting like jerks.



Also, this doesn't serve their purpose in any way. Yoeli is hardly a danger to principles of amateurism, and this rather than encourage players to return to school is more likely going to encourage the opposite. Also, i'm sure they'll love it when Jay Bilas keeps bringing it up as the latest negative example of NCAA unfairness and overreach multiple times on ESPN in every game BYU plays in Maui.

Probably. Last I heard they were only looking to add one more, and most of their non-conference opponents have already published their schedules showing when they're playing us.

I hope Byufanforever and BlueK are right. The NCAA is just bullying BYU and probably other non favored schools as well. I hope they are replaced with a much more fair organization.

Rob Dauster from NBC Sports (posted on Yahoo Sports) says the punishment is too harsh:

The NCAA has to do something, but considering the mitigating circumstances here – and the fact that the NCAA should want to incentivize players like Childs coming back to school – docking him 30 percent of his senior season is too much when suspending him for three games would have accomplished what they needed to accomplish.

It's excessive. NCAA is using BYU as an example and they know they can use BYU as an example because BYU will just "turn the other cheek." Plus, BYU brings little money to the NCAA compared to other larger, big-time basketball programs. Do this to Duke or Kentucky and there would be hell to pay. We have little sway (money) over the NCAA. No lose of revenue or no threat of a lawsuit (lost money) from BYU.
