MWC Recruiting Snapshot

Despite falling out of ESPN's top-25 classes, BYU owns[/i] the MWC. Now just to turn this into victories over the purple-cougar-eaters.

I dispute that there were no five starers in BYU's recruited class.

ESPN.com has Heaps as a four-star and the #7 quarterback overall. You can thank Tool McGay for that one--Heaps spurned the Scouts Inc. (McShay's company) camp, and Heaps immediately dropped from #1 in their rankings, also dropping out of ESPNU's top 150.



Having said that, Heaps was still only a 4-star before the fix kicked in--they only dropped him 3 rating points to an 80, putting him just on the outside looking in for the top 150.



Only one of the big three recruiting services has ANY quarterbacks as 5-star talent--it's a down year at that position. I know there are a lot of conspiracy-theorist fans who think scouts just want to knock down Heaps because he committed to BYU so early, but do you really think they would downgrade an entire class of quarterbacks??

This is the first year I've ever followed recruiting. Two questions about the MWC:



1. Is Mike Locksley apparently one of those "can't coach worth a dime, but recruits well" sort of guys, or has UNM always recruited decently? UNM may have had the least number of recruits, but that's a decent number of 3*s and the only 4* that went to a non- "big 3" program.



2. Obviously, recruits don't change programs until they've been tested and proven on the field, but what programs do you think are moving in the right direction, and which look like they've stalled? I've got to think SDSU is pretty happy with the direction things are going, too.

New Mexico doesn't recruit well. SDSU has always gotten decent talent in Feb that for some reason the last decade hasn't translated to on the field success in the fall.

a lot of these schools rely on JUCO talent which is never well scouted, but I also think that ESPN has the absolute worst scouting system out there. They cherry pick from other services with a massive BCS bias and they don't do much with juco, which is the bread and butter of teams like Utah.

I totally agree. They seem to pump up kids that commit to USC or Florida or Texas or fill in the blank BCS school and downplay kids that commit to non-BCS programs. You can't tell me that Heaps isn't a top 150 prospect.
