2010 WR's

I'm curious about something... I just finished reading an article about Ross Apo and how his nickname is "Randy Moss" cause of his play and measurements relate to Moss. Which is frickin' awesome! :evil:



With our current WR's, ones who just signed on today, and our returning missionaries Marcus Mathews, i.e.

What is the average height, speed, or anything about them???



I can go through and figure it out, but I have an awesome feeling someone already knows...

Looks like they're definitely geting bigger with OC and the Matthews brothers and Apo,and maybe a tad faster;don't know that ther's a Todd Watkins type burner,other than Phillips,who's a lot shorter than Watkins,certainly remains to be seen if there is an AC in the bunch.We've actually been quite blessed in the WR category recently;I am looking forward to the footrace betweeen McKay Jacobsen and Phillips for bragging rights.

Mitch Matthews is in the MTC at the moment and Marcus has been back for quite some time from his mission (he grey shirted to get back in shape and get some classes under his belt) both are now a legit 6'5"+ and I wouldn't be surprised to see Marcus cross trained at tight end.



Apo is a gym rat and I think he'll do everything possible to earn that Randy Moss name.



neither of those guys have to do a thing next year if Luke Ashworth, McKay Jacobson, Oneill Chambers, and Spencer Hafoka all improve.. in fact Apo will have trouble breaking up that rotation (where do you find the minutes?). (if Dez Bryant of Oklahoma State, and Michael Crabtree of Texas tech can be redshirted, then I'm not sure if a redshirt for Apo isn't a bad idea... I guess we'll see)

Idefinitely think a red shirt could bein order for Apo also.Doyou know enough about this kid's mental makeup to know how he'd do with a RS year?he was a" Heap's recruit",how would he do if Heaps were to be the starter and he's sitting for a year?i know,he's gotta be willing to do what's best for the team and what the coaches want,but some kids are fine with the RS and some are not.

Apo redshirting?



This is the Texas boy who tore it up in the Army game that made Scouts bump up his star status to a four ALL with a gimp shoulder AND who was impressed with his speed and hands.



If his shoulder heals well and in time from surgery... I don't doubt he'll be up to par with the likes of Chambers. I'm even sure he'll be more productive than McKay.

I think you mean to say: impressed Scouts in practice for the Army game. He didn't have a reception in the game.

I will be honest of something. I was not that impressed with our WR play last year. In the big games, our WR had a tough time getting open on the outside. Now, maybe that was the way we ran the offense with 2 TE's, maybe it was that Max looked for Pitta and George first. But our guys did not make a lot of plays. Jacobsen had a much worse year than I expected. His injury may have been a factor, though. JSame with OC. Just saying that I see a chance for Apo and Matthews to get PT, because no one in that WR core last year locked down a spot for PT as I see it. I think BYU will platoon 6-8 guys next year and then cut back to 4-5 later once guys show what they can do.

Well, they had trouble getting open in our 2 losses, if that's what you mean. But if you evaluate the team on those, I'm not really that impressed with anyone on the team last year. But I think they did fine in the Utah game (big game), the Oklahoma game (big game), and absolutely awesome in the bowl game (big game).

In the Utah game, the WR were not great. Max completed 11 passes because dudes did not get open for him. Same wit the TCU game. Those teams targeted taking away Pitta and George and put the onus on the WR core to make plays, and those stratetgies worked both times. If WR were open, it was screens. But not down field. And that is to what I refer. Our WR core struggles to get open and get separation down the field last year. Not sure why. And by downfield, I mean 7 yards or more off LOS.



And seeing how BSU torched the TCU secondary in the Fiesta Bowl down the field, it really put in in perspective for me. It might have been scheme in part, but our guys did not worry those teams at all.

I second that!



McKay dropped many balls. I can't really remember any stand out plays from him, minus the OU game.



Chambers was trying so hard he would forget to hold onto the ball. Awesome at kick returns though!



Ashworth was the better of them IMO.



Maybe I just got greedy with Collie's awesome route running and always finding ways to get open.



I look forward to Apo putting pressure on the rest of the men.... Therefore making themselves better!

I agree. Our receivers in the utah and tcu games just weren't getting open.

BYU definitely had trouble sretching the field this past year,at least in some games,and has had since Watkins/Colliie.we have been a more "ball control" passing game in the last few years.could be personnel,could be scheme.McKay is very fast,is he close to the route runner AC was?

AC's first year back from the mission wasn't spectacular, either. Now that McKay has a year to get his legs back... I'm sure we'll see the McKay we all had been hoping for. I'm still very optimistic about him.

There were at least two instances where OC got open against Utah, one in the end zone, and Max missed both times.



McKay had the long TD vs FSU, and then got hurt. He never fully recovered after that.

I don't belive MJ is very close to AC as a route runner, but yeah, he's only played 1 season since the mission so we'll see. As for Apo, I don't have any problem with this guy taking snaps in place of Chambers if he is looking good. I never understood the fascination with Reed and I feel the same about Chambers at WR. Those guys don't stretch the field well enough at all to say for sure they are deserving starters. Let them play it out in spring ball.

Apo will not be competing in spring ball, he's post surgery... another reason to believe a redshirt might happen.

The biggest difference in not being able to stretch the field is not the wide receivers it is the quarterback. John Beck had a much stronger arm than Max Hall. As a result he could hit Watkins far enough down the field that Watkins had outrun the DB. From that play they also were able to run a deep comeback since the DB's were so worried about getting beat deep that we would consistantly pick up 20 yards on the comeback. Max didn't have a strong enough arm for the deep ball so we also never ran the deep comeback because the DB's didn't respect the deep ball.

John Beck's deep ball was extremely overrated. He had a cannon, and decent accuracy. And he didn't throw it nearly as well his SR year as he did previously. Both Max and Beck consistently underthrew McKay when they played with him. But yes, simply having the ability to throw it deep helped Beck and certainly limited what BYU could do offensively to a degree.



If I were to judge Heaps' arm, I'd put it somewhere between the two QBs. I do think that he could have more accuracy than either QB though.

Very good point. Mckay should be a lot better this year.
