I have learned for myself through an unimpeachable source[no Mars not my boyhood friend GM,or from Rusty or Steed or Airwolf,none of whom i know other than reading this and the previous board for years before joining] that I owe an apology to several of you,and that you were RIGHT and I was WRONG,re Kona and the manner of his recruitment.seems KS actually was not 100% committed,in fact he never ever made a trip to Provo ever,including as you and I knew the recruiting weekend with the snowmobiles and all.Evidently coach Mendenhall tried and tried to get him here and at the end of the day KS told him instead that he would trip to UW and ND and Bronco very reasonably pulled his schollie offer.wether Bronco said the bit about the HC was prob immaterial at that point and as some have suggested may not have been terribly unreasonable given the situation.evidently there were academic issues as well,that may have become problematic.not gonna give my source,you have yours and I have mine,and before you attack me again Mars,how about an armistice or at least cooling off period?

so in no particular order,SNO,McGregor,anyone else who argued that KS was being less than 100% forthright,you were CORRECT and I was INCORRECT.just wanted to give the lad the benefit of doubt and I guess unhappily he was not deserving.

Schwenke and the family were less than honest with BYU... Bronco did the right thing, bottom line

The facts hinted very strongly at the beginning that Kona was jerking BYU around, and as more come to light, it is becoming increasingly obvious that BYU was only a leveraging tool for the Schwenke family and his schollie can be better used somewhere else.



I've also moved this topic to the Football forum where it belongs.

My take on the "not live the honor code" part of the report has always been that I believe that Bronco said something that was understood by the dad to be words to that effect. My experience is that people participating in events (especially highly contentious events as this one appeaed to be) can have different perceptions about what was said, and what was meant. Stated another way, I think that Bronco said something that the dad honestly believe was an impeachment on Kona's ability to live the honor code; but that doesn't mean that Bronco said it, it means that Bronco said something that the Dad understood to mean that.

Good post, Clem. Never held your view against you, just thought that you were missing something. Thanks for letting your integrity be your guide.

This whole situation makes me think that Bronco was asking KS, are you gonna follow what your coach asks of you, or are you gonna do what your friends want you to do. If your unwilling to follow your coach, and friends are more important, than maybe pulling the schollie isn't a bad thing.

hawk,thanks for "doing that vodoo that you do"with my post.glad you guys are willing to forgive what was probably becoming some bullheadedness[word?] on my part re the KS thing. 8)

Is there a lot of perception that Kona was gonna play much as a Freshman? All I know is that if he really is 6-5 and 215 lbs he is not ready to see a lot of action against 300 lb D-I linemen. Personally I'll take the guys who want to be in the program and run through walls for the coaches and let the other schools have the prima donnas.
