Allow me to resurrect this dead horse

My sincerest apologies for bringing up the Schwenke ordeal. Just wanted to add some useless opinion . . . .



Commitment

To those that think that Kona was 100% committed to BYU, you're dreaming. Don't think that Kona was completely committed, got a phone call from ND, and said to himself, "I'm committed to BYU, but maybe it would be fun to go visit Manti on ND's dollar."



No.



The Kahuku Pipeline

To those that think we are burning the Kahuku pipeline . . . Again, you're wrong. We're burning a pipeline of trouble that needs to be shut off. We have strong ties to Kahuku, will always have strong ties there, and those ties will allow us to recruit the kids we want, and the kids that want BYU. Kahuku kids have a different mentality, and some products of that mentality have caused some heartburn for BYU. Just understand that this has nothing to do with the pipeline, it has only to do with getting rid of some stinky gas.



Yanking Scholarships

Most schools do it. More schools will start doing it. The principle to recruits is that you need to take your fun trips early. Get them out of the way. Do not commit unless you plan to honor your commitment. Each and every school has the right, and is in the right, to yank a scholarship from a kid that only intends to use that scholarship as a safety valve.



After all, the kid is intending to yank a recruit from the school. But they get the benefit of the doubt for being an 18-year old kid. I'm not buying it. These kids are adults now, will leave their homes soon to be men, and have to start playing by grown-up rules. They have been blessed with talent, and their parents need to bless them with sound advice.



Integrity

It's my personal opinion--a lowly opinion of a lowly fan--that the way the Kona situation was played out reflects poorly on the family. They attempted to mislead before reporters ever contacted them, and then subsequently misled when speaking to the reports in order to cast a more favorable light on their son. It's disappointing.



Why I'm Not Crying

BYU is about to sign--without Jamora and without Kona--it's best class of recruits ever. These kids will prove to be excellent players, even if some don't pan out. What blows me away is how good some of the kids are that we don't even talk about much. This is going to be an amazing class, and we have a lot to look forward to in the years to come.



A Humble Prediction

Kids that spurned BYU this year will regret it before they graduate.

No. The pipeline will continue to exist long after Robert Anae is gone. And in fact, I wouldn't consider Robert Anae as a reason the pipeline exists currently. Depending on who you believe, there's even reason to believe that the pipeline exists DESPITE Robert Anae.

Mighty Mac - that was a solid post. As always - your posts have good insights & "gravitas." I agree whole-heartedly, Kona Schwenke - and others - that turn their backs on the Football program @ BYU will one day - sooner or later - open their eyes & realize they made a poor decision. Kona will rue the day he got on that plane. BYU's program will move forward & be a mighty force.

Where's the integrity?

I have no problem with kids checking out other schools; but I do have a problem with kids and families not being able to take responsibility for the consequences of their actions.

Bronco says, "we'd like to have Kona here but our scholarships have dried up and if Kona decides to make that trip, then we have to pull the offer and give it to a kid we know will be here."

McKay Schwenke then turns around and acts like he has no choice....

YOU HAD A CHOICE, YOU MADE IT, NOW BE A MAN AND ACCEPT THE CONSEQUENCES WITHOUT BLAMING BYU FOR THE CHOICE YOU MADE.



I'm done with Kahuku.



There are other pipelines we can milk. The more we win, the more we'll pull from other areas.



Those folks out there hold a grudge worse than the Hatfields V McCoys. They are only loyal to themselves and I have seen no semblance of integrity or responsibility.



BYU and Bronco handled Manti, Shiloah, and Kona with kid gloves. Bronco could have thrown the Teos under the bus to avoid dealing with the speculation. He could have booted Shiloah after one of several other instances that he had been involved in drinking, etc. (It's BYU how do you not know the rules?)

Before the smoke had cleared, Brian Teo was saying that Manti had not been involved, when we knew the truth. (Whether Manti had lied to him or not, is not the issue...)

When will these families take responsibility for their kids and stop blaming BYU and Bronco.

Bronco did not go out and drive drunk and lie about it.

If they were my kids, I'd be more concerned about their actions than trying to place blame on someone else.



Bronco did not pick up the phone and agree to make a trip to South Bend... and BYU does not have to honor a scholarship offer in light of a kid trying to sell himself to other programs before signing day.

For McKay Schwenke to say that he's seen, "the ugly side of BYU" is cowardly and shows complete lack of integrity and respect for the instituion that represents his faith.



When will these folks be asked to act like men of integrity. If you want to take a look at other schools, be man enough to admit it. Don't blame BYU for pulling a coveted scholarship offer when they have none left and could be out recruiting someone else while the Schwenkes go get wined and dined in South Bend (which is a dump btw)



I'm flabergasted and exhausted reading these families place blame on everyone but themselves. Take some responsibility, make your boys grow up and face the music or get lost.



I don't care if you have a grudge against BYU, we shouldn't be recruiting you anyhow. The Schwenke and Teo name is dead to me, as is Kahuku high. It's one of a hundred thousand plus high schools in this country, we don't need them. Bronco and the BYU staff deserves better than to play these games with them.



It's very clear that the folks out there are offended by how the Teo clan had been treated and have a bone to pick with BYU... If only they'd hold their kids accountable, they'd realize that BYU is not the problem and never has been. In fact these Kahuku kids need BYU more than they realize, especially in light of their behavior.



If I were Bronco, I'd write off Kahuku. Let these kids and families find another school to take advantage of. We're not a 2nd rate school that's ok with letting these kids use us for exposure to get what they perceive as bigger offers.



BTW, Notre Dame and Washington have not won a thing in the last half decade, so apparently good football and winning were not part of equation (in that same time, BYU is the 3rd winningest program). This is all about their egos... nothing more nothing less.

Believe it or not, I forgot something.



This ordeal is an example of Bronco being a priciple-centered leader. Pure and simple. And because his action are predicated on sound principles of fairness, integrity, and opportunity, his actions now will echo through recruiting classes for years to come.

Who knows what comments are "printed up", slipped into a file & used - out of context - by Yewt, UW, or Notre Dame recruiters against the Y. Who knows what effect "Yewt propanda" would have on an impressionable 17 y/0 mind!!!! Believe me - I do not put it past these other schools to pull any trick under the blue sky. Bronco & his recruiters are very unusual regarding their ethical standards.

Seriously - I would not put it past Yewt recruiters to use any trick possible to sway a hotly contested High School kid that both the Y & them Yewts are vying for. I'm just that cynical. My hang up - I know.

Nice post, Mac. That fine Scottish intellect is Showing. The real problem here is not with them changing their mind. People do that all the time, for good and bad reasons, both ways. The problem is in timing (very poor), but mostly in claiming one thing while doing another (at the worst time possible), then blaming someone else for the consequences of their decision. I would hope if a recruit were to read this site he'd find CougarCorner refreshing as that we actually treat the recruits like adults who are praised for their successes and encouraged to make the right choices. Yes, there are some people who speak out in order to get themselves heard and maybe don't have the benefit of logic on their side, but for everyone one of them we have a mcgregor, snoscythe, abyufan, and so many more.



But really, recruits are probably better suited not reading any fan website.
