ProV11. Come to BYU. It's a great school, a great environment, a great football program with great coaches that will prepare you for game day and life.
2. Realize that you are at the bottom of the totem pole again. There are upperclassmen who have "grinded" it out for years and have earned the spots that you seek. Come humble and ready to work. If you are better than they, awesome, but don't expect or demand anything. And if you do get beat out, don't b and m and sulk and transfer. Work hard and your shot will come.
3. Don't read fan message boards. If you do, realize that the posters represent 1% of the fan base and 99% of them have never played a down of football (not counting flag football, mutual night, and turkey bowls.) Focus only on the positive feedback from fans.
4. Enjoy the recruiting process. You are a teenager and adults are treating you like royalty. Enjoy the meals and travel and sunshine blowing. Get to know programs and coaches and other recruits. Study it out which school fits best with everything you have to offer and what it can offer you. But once you commit to a school keep your word. Make your decision and move forward, don't look over the fence at others. It's admittedly difficult in a culture where coaches with 5 year contracts bolt as soon as a better deal comes along. Don't follow their example.
5. Chances are pretty slim that you'll go pro. Finish your education, find a babe (there a plenty in Provo), and prepare for real life.
6. Realize up front that your current teammates will be your friends for life. Build friendship and trust and support each other.
7. If your coach tells you to cut your hair, cut it. If he tells you not to visit another school, don't. If he wants you to play on special teams, do it. Do what you're told and your life will be easier. And it will prepare you nicely for marriage.
Have I missed anything?
