Interesting article about recruiting international players in men's college basketball. Apparently it's a "dirty business" that involves paying a handler fee, basically paying an agent who is telling the player where to go. For obvious reasons Rose didn't like this type of business so that is partially why he stayed away from it in the past few years.



BYU also rarely budges when a player scores low on the TOEFL whereas other schools will. Apparently last year we had Russian "star" Agasiy Tonoyan all in the bag but he scored too low on the TOEFL twice. He told VTF that other universities were willing to accept his score, but that BYU was the only school he was interested in and he ended up playing professionally in Russia.



I wonder where Gonzaga and St. Mary's fit in with the handler fees and TOEFL scores? Hmm...

BYU is very big on the TOEFL test because it's such an academically rigorous school. Students that are native English speakers struggle to stay qualified. Kids who can barely speak English have no chance.
