BYU Police and the Honor Code Office

Today BYU issued a press release with an FAQ on the attempt to decertify Campus Police.

Included was this nugget:

8. Does University Police share information with the Honor Code Office or other campus units?



University Police shares information with campus units in situations involving public safety or public law enforcement. To comply with federal education laws like Title IX, the Clery Act and the Drug Free Schools Act, University Police is legally required to share certain information with other campus units. University Police responds to formal requests by anyone for law enforcement records that may legally be made available to the public.

This is exactly the problem. Any answer other than a clean "no" is unacceptable IMHO. This is just a long-winded "yes" and indicates they have no intention of changing things.

The Honor Code Office needs to be completely dismantled and restructured. ALL personnel currently working may be reassigned to other areas of the university's administrative structure or find new employment. But that entire office is tainted.



Perhaps it can make a re-appearance in another manner, but as currently constituted, it needs to end.

Did something happen recently that sparked this? I've been out at Arches/Canyonlands and haven't touched the news.

+1 and it turned the student body into a group of self appointed morality police for our athletic department.
