So, why did they name it iPad?

I'm a huge Mac fan, proud owner of several (virus free -- Ha!) Macs (iMac, Mac Mini, MacBook Pro, and 2 iPods) but I am seriously getting tired of the i-everything. Now it's iBooks from the iBookstore.



Apple had the chance to move into the 21st century with a revolutionary product with a revolutionary name (think iPod of 2000), but instead they stuck with the same old, tired "i" prefix.



I think the iPad looks really cool, and Apple is going to sell tons of these to college students, but I wish they would have simply called it the Mac Slate or the Apple Pad.

I wouldn't harp on the virus free thing. We finally had to install anti-virus on our Macs at work because they kept getting infected. We wouldn't have know except we have an IT guy who knew what to look for. Macs are getting more and more viruses, but Apple does a good job of making a computer that doesn't let you know. As more and more people move to Macs, the hackers will have more incentive to work on that angle.



As for the iPad, I agree that the name is lame-o. I don't know that college students are going to gobble these up instead of netbooks--tablets died out when people realized that hand writing was MUCH slower than typing on a keyboard. The iPad is very much a niche product.



What the iPad will do is absolutely kill Kindle and Sony Reader, as well as sound the death-knell for the portable DVD player market. You look at the price point and you know exactly who Apple was taking aim at. The text might be a bit harder to read on the iPad's color screen as opposed to the digital ink on the Kindle, but the broader capability of the iPad will make the difference. This will be a computer for the casual user who does little more surf the web, watch videos, and do music and photos. Anyone doing any word processing will need something with a keyboard.

I think people who are looking for a device to read books on will still likely go with a kindle or reader, the cost and features of the maxiPad are just such that it doesn't make sense. I

And here I thought I was stumbling into a thread about Apple's entry into the feminine hygiene market.

All I know is Mac could have gotten a gazillion artists to buy if they only included some kind of pressure sensitivity. I suspected artists probably weren't on their radar though, and now I know for sure.

Malware and trojans downloaded and installed (however unwittingly) by end users don't count. However, I agree 100% with your last statement.

I was about to purchase one of those iPads until I saw that first video . . . now it just feels kind of "Icky".

I happen to completely agree. A Kindle has no service contract- works all over and its battery life is measured in days.
