BYU gets their 30th Commit

"Dallin McEwen, a senior quarterback at Mission Viejo High School in California, has accepted an offer to be a preferred walk-on at BYU, according to his prep coach, Bob Johnson. McEwen recently led the Diablos to the CIF-SS Pac-5 semifinals and the South Coast League championship."

I'd assume they're not interested in him as a QB--any info on what else he might play?

I don't like the term "commit" for these last two guys. IMO, a preferred walkon is not a commit. Guys who will sign a LOI with a scholarship tied to it are commits.

Why would you assume that? It's not like he has to have a shot at playing right away to remain a QB. You always need to make sure you have adequate depth at QB. Check out this kid's youtube highlights. Obviously, he's never going to supplant any of the scholarship players we'll have on roster but if he has mission plans and with a redshirt, he could provide a nice 2nd or 3rd string option in the future. I'd love to see all the guys (Heaps, Nelson, Lark, Munns) stay once the starter gets named but you know that is just not realistic. Hey, if this kid pays his dues and works hard, he could even see some playing time in the future.

In a lot of ways I think these guys are MORE committed than the ones who get their school paid for. (i.e. Rudy was more committed to ND than the guy whose dad and brothers all played for ND so he got a scholie)

So VanNoy last year and Uona Kaveinga this year aren't "commits" then. Interesting line-drawing in the terminology. They sure sounds committed. Just like Andrew Rich.

Guys who will be on scholarship are commits. Van Noy is on scholarship. Kaveinga is a transfer. It is semantics, but the two most recent guys don't count against our scholarship limit.

Neither did VanNoy in his class. Neither will Ah Ching in this class...
