An NM sports writer praised SDSU for their talents and genius of dressing up like missionaries. It's a novel approach and idea to spur Cougars. Yelling polygamy was also novel and constructive. What an idiot.



Actually, don't even give it notice, I just thought it was interesting. If it was a gay school or an all black school or a jewish school. The country would be in uproar. But since it's mormons, it's all good.

Totally classless move by several dozen San Diego State students who dressed up as Mormon missionaries to mock BYU when the Cougars came to town Saturday night. Riding the opposition is fine, but there are a few things that are off-limits, and religion is of them.

unfortunately Seth Davis whom you quoted above re the "classless" actions of the SDSU students,had more to say about our Cougs in his article,which left me scratching my head.on page three of the same article he has us at #23,down 6 spots from last week despite the SDSU win on the road and not losing[which he references] because he needed to make a "course correction"????i think that as we continue winning we will paradoxically see more of this attitude as the pundits struggle to come to grips with our gaudy record.they will discount us for any and all reasons,similar to Jay Bilas saying that the west is just down this year and that we're not better than last year,inferring that we might not even be as good as the 2009 team.the powers that be just don't want us to be part of the discussion.

I read him calling SDSU students "classless" for what they did and I was about to send him an email thanking him for calling a skunk a skunk and then I saw his AP ballot where he dropped BYU six spots from #17 to 23 after they went 2-0 during the week with one win on the road. It's hard to respect the intelligence of someone that does that. For hecks sake, I'm a Buckeye fan, but to rank them #13 with 6 losses? Come on dimwit, screw in the bulb, something isn't turned on!

It appears as if I'm in the minority. But to me:



Dressing up like Missionaries = Stupid fun ...but, ultimately, not bad.



I do not consider missionaries or what they wear to be sacred, at least in the context of just cheering at a sporting event. Now if they have people dressed up like missionaries doing things that are just “wrong” then I would have a problem with that, but the dressing up as missionaries alone, I got no problem with.



Ultimately if I’m OK putting on a resume that I served a 2 year mission to Florida, and try to use that as a positive, then people can make fun of that mission in a way that counts as a negative.



Now, If they were wearing temple clothes or treating things I hold sacred as a way of taunting - then I would have a huge problem with it. But to me dressing up in missionary garb is just good ol’ college fun.

I guess this guy is living proof, some people came from apes.

while i agree that dressing up as missionaries isn't THAT bad,i think it speaks to the fact that as an LDS person you have to develop thick skin,and ya maybe that isn't so bad.there is clearly a religious bigotry standard in this country,and then there's the standard for talking about the Mormons.i guarantee that if these same students had been wearing Hasidic jewish garb complete with earlocks,the ADL[anti-defamation league] would slap a lawsuit on the University for condoning this so quickly, it would make our heads spin.and that's probably as it should be.

I'm not so sure. I think we really need less lawsuits and thicker skin across the board. But again, making fun of things people hold sacred is one thing, making fun of things that are tied to religion, but are not sacred is a different matter.



But then again, my sons and I are known to when mom is playing “Rock of Ages” sing the words “Oh my darling Clementine, Oooooh my dar- ing Clementine! Oh my darling Clementine … Oh my darling Clementine! Oh my darling Clementine – Oh my darling Clementine!”



Or the primary song “From the in the leafy treetops we shoot the birds in the morning!”

i'm sure that your creative hijacking of primary songs' lyrics isn't EXACTLY on the same level of miscreance as Rick Majerus saying on ESPN radio with Dan Patrick at the microphone,referencing BYU and their chances in a particular game,"i don't know,their magic underwear just sends me south".if you honestly believe that people should have to endure such rubbish,then i honestly have to say that your skin may be a bit too thick.i'm 1/4 Jew and the holocaust wasn't that long ago for my ancestors in their little stetl in Poland.never forget.

I'm only commenting on the fact that I have no problem with some college students dressed up as missionaries at a basketball game. That said, I do find those "Hitler reacts to (fill in the blank here)" videos on youtube to be funny

ok,i'm going to try this again[post just got censored].you are right i brought up jewish people and the holocaust to give some perspective.i can do this as I'm part jew like i said earlier.the thing about religious bigotry is that it's a slippery slope.let me explain,no,let me sum up.three or four years ago i went with my wife to the UofA game in tucson.the game started out well enough with the combined institute choirs singing the national anthem,and desite the fact that we had to endure signs and taunts as we went in the visitor's section referencing JS in contemptible tone,we thought this is cool,the choir's representing.well as the night wore on the chants got really ugly with" expletive JS","expletive the temple",and little ladies getting beat up in their seats and in the aisles for being Y fans.it was so bad that as you might remember,their University president sent a formal apology on behalf of their students.see,this is what the ADL understands,and that's that tolerance of religious bigotry in it's earliest stages can lead quickly to some pretty horrific acts.it's one thing if you make the decision to not take yourself too seriously,but quite another if you're forced in to this mind set by derision.I hope you can understand this.

I booed the Stanford Band back with thier Ken Jennings routine, and thought that they were out of bounds with their portrayal of the many wifes. I thought that that routine was way way out of bounds. I don't know how I would react today, but I suspect that I would react the same way. Hawk, the "Your still Mormon" chant I would probably laugh off as stupid, but I guess I would have to be there to see. In short we all seem to agree that there is a line; it just appears that we disagree as to exactly where the line is.

I don't think that dressing up as missionaries crosses the line, it bugs me a little, but I can see the humor in it. There is an obvious double-standard in how we are treated vs. Jewish faith, Muslim faith, etc. But I think that some of it comes from the fact that we can take a joke, we are counseled not to be easily offended (and the other part of it comes from adversary-promoted bias in the liberal media).

Fan behavior has become so atrocious, it's difficult to imagine anything off limits. Basketball is the worst, because the floor is smaller than a football stadium, and the fans are right down on the floor, and most everything is very visible.



In High Priest quorum yesterday, somebody brought it up, and most everyone was offended by it, but it's totally unnecessary. What do they expect the result to be? that the players won't play? that they'll shoot poorly because they'll be looking at the stupid fans?



"Friendly competition" is no longer friendly. Some of us still remember the days when someone, anyone, was shooting a free throw, everyone was quiet, the cheerleaders stopped cheering, the fans were quiet, and you gave the guy a little respect--but it was the same for everybody, your team or the other team. I kind of gag at all this nonsense that fans do behind the basket these days--and do they really think it makes any difference? A good player, a good shooter, zones out everything anyway, the crowd, the noise, the fans--they just play, and they're good, so they focus. I just get really tired of this in your face junk. Can't we just play basketball, I'll cheer for my team, you cheer for yours...and stop all the personal, in your face, offensive, stupid behavior?

I'm honestly not trying to be disrespectful but that bothering you does amuse me a little. I think there is nothing wrong with fans going crazy while a guy is taking a foul shot, I mean yeah a good player can zone it out but I doubt most players can. I mean if you have a problem with that then I think you might as well have a problem with fans getting loud when the opposing team is dribbling down the court and trying to set up for a score. That's why you make noise so it can screw them up so they can't make the points or set up their play. Should a good player be able to zone that out too? Probably, but as I was saying most players probably can't, which is why being on your own court is such an advantage. (And also helping your team get pumped up to play hard, which a lot of guys can sometimes do more easily when playing in a hostile environment that isn't their own.) It's the same thing with Football. Fans are loud before the ball is snapped so it makes it harder to hear the count. and it can also be used as a distraction.

ABYUFAN,agreed.it is good to be able to take a joke when offense is not intended.sometimes however,despite our best intention,the joke's on us.are there worse things in this world? ya absolutely.it would be nice if people were more civil though,and I'm not sure if we deserve that civility if we don't expect /demand it from ourselves and others.

I know this is a little off topic, but the thread about making noise wasn't done in day past made me think of something I noticed this season when Wyoming was playing TCU that relates to something that used to be. When the foreign players (Wyoming has 3 players from France and I can't remember if TCU has 3 or 4 non-USA players) incurred a foul, they were raising their hand and facing the scorer's table. That was old school and required in days that are now growing further past. I marveled that these European players were doing that as it had faded from out basketball world now for probably a decade or two. You had to do it even if you didn't think you had foulded as you were told by the ref that you were being called for a foul.



As I said, a bit off topic, but things have changed and I have to agree with the thought now that it is appropriate to make as much noise as you can to distract. It's part of home court advantage. It still bugs me because of that that the Marriot Center was purposesly designed so that fans wouldn't have the ability to interupt fouls being shot. Then they went even further and put all the blue-hairs down there and you have to look for their chests to even move to know if they are still alive.
