A Recruit's Mom called in to Dr. Laura

(Per my wife). It was a short call. "Rebecca" said that her son is a junior in high school and has two scholarship offers to play football. She really wants him to play at her religion's university, but he's not so sure yet. Dr. Laura said to let the kid make up his own mind, though if Mom really wants to she could use financial motivations to help him make the right choice (example: providing him gas money, IF he chooses her school). That was it.



I'm 99.9% sure I know who the recruit is. Now I'm not going to say his name or anything, but his initials are R.M. http://byu.scout.com/2/899450.html

Do you mean RK as in Ryan Kessman. Sounds to me like a player who doesn't want to be at BYU. I want true cougars who will truly commit and give their all. I was even shaky about taking Kaveinga back from USC, but his story tells us about the quality of SC and how nasty it must be...including illegal activity, so good move on his part.

Yes Dr. Laura is a national talk radio show. My wife listens to her. Actually - she's pretty good. She wrote a book about 3 years ago that's worth reading - a number of guys have read it w/ their wives & recommend it: "The Proper Care & Feeding of Husbands." It is very supportive of men & their roles.

Yeah, my wife downloads her onto her iPod and listens in the kitchen while making dinner or doing dishes (barefoot, of course!). She called me in and replayed the phone call for me to listen to. I kinda feel bad for the kid, because you know his buddies will be ribbing him about his mom just a little bit at school. It is nice that she cares so much though.



As for R.M., he's too busy playing basketball right now to worry too much about football recruiting. He's going to let it all soak in for a long time before finally making a decision. Which is also kind of too bad, because BYU loves the kids who want to be a Cougar soo bad that they jump right on an official offer from Coach Mendenhall. This kid seems worth waiting for though. Hopefully he doesn't make the same mistake of waiting as long as Heimuli did...

Word. My wife is doing her PhD in a Marriage/Family-related field right now. If I really want to get under her skin, all I have to do is mention Dr. Laura. Of course then I get to listen to an hour-long spiel about how "Dr" Laura isn't even really qualified to do what she does and on and on. Yeah, pop psych sells ads on the radio and that's about it ... unless it gets us a four-star DE ;)

If the kid is being recruited as an O-lineman to BYU, and goes elsewhere, I can live with it. We have no trouble getting great players at that position. Now if he is supposed to be some stud DE, then I want him. If BYU can get a great D-line, the rest of the D will be so much better as a result. Just ask the Minnesota vikings D-coordinator...

The more time passes by, the more I think she needs help more than anyone else. She a lonely, rambling woman who basically goes for shock value in every sentence she spews.

The license is not from USC. USC offers night classes and community outreach classes that allowed her to take the California state licensing test to be a psychotherapist. California law prohibits her from holding herself out to be a therapist unless she has a degree in psychology or is a licensed psychiatrist. She is neither.



What's more, what she does on the radio is the antithesis of psychotherapy. Psychotherapy is centered around building a relationship between the patient and the aide---doesn't happen on the radio.


She has been married for 24 years


She's actually been married about 30 years, just to different guys. She had an affair with the current guy while he was still married with kids.


and has a son in the military.


Good for him. Now if his mom would just stop trying to leverage that for her credibility.



In case you're wondering why/how I know all this, my wife bought her book and was antagonizing over it, so I needed to explain to her why she was wasting her time. It's like taking diet advice from Oprah--she's lost hundreds of pounds during her life, so she must know what works, right?

PhD = Doctorate. Thus the term "Dr." is technically accurate.

Not a "therapy show?" Brutha - I know ladies that listen to Dr. Laura as if it is "The Word" coming down from the burning bush! That's no joke! Perhaps you, myself & most men folk don't take her show seriously - or take it in any way - or any form - but a whole lot of females do!!! That's a fact - sad as it is.
