He missed all of the past season. I'm interested to see what will come of all these scholarships being freed up.

And I wonder whether some of these are being semi-encouraged to find greener pastures by the coaches.

Ben Criddle's show is talking about all the transfers and mentioned that Tevita for whatever personal reasons did a redshirt while he was dealing with some issues and that there is somewhat a shift in the staff where they are considering guys either "in" or "out". They are moving past guys who may be dealing with some stuff and aren't sure they want to be here. If the players aren't fully committed and all in--especially if they have been here several years and are graduating they are moving them out and going with guys who want to be here and are committed and working. Examples of the difference were Takitaki, El-Bakri, and Lapuaho vs some of these guys who are transferring.



This also makes some sense because they are under a bit of a scholarship crunch with guys coming back from missions and filling needs with the current recruiting class.

Makes sense, a solid recruiting strategy for BYU is for the kids to recruit BYU and prove they want to be here, not try to kiss the players butts and make them feel like they should be here. Glad to see Kalani making this move in his mentality.

Wasn't the previous coaching staff criticized for this kind of thinking?

Bronco was roundly criticized for his letting kids recruit BYU comments. But this is not the context that Criddle was talking about. He was talking about kids who have been in the program but may not necessarily been focused enough or proven skilled enough to remain part of the program. These guys have been with the program 4 years and are graduating--yet still are not able to crack a 2-deep or stay on the field with much regularity. Those are the guys that the team can't afford to keep around. They are consuming scholarships and the team needs the scholarships for guys who can make a difference on the field.

The coaches will continue to recruit and show interest in the best players they can find who can help the team. Changing that doesn't make any sense.

Which is no different than it's literally ever been.

Is there any NCAA provision against giving that kind of a player a soft landing by saying, hey, you're no longer on the team, but the school will still waive tuition fees for you. Something that let's them continue their education where they started--which imho should be the point collegiate athletics.

I think this is allowed, and is common, with career-ending injuries.
