4th Down Improvement

One area that I think BYU's offense and Grimes, in particular, could greatly improve on is 4th down offense.



Here are the 4th downs BYU attempted and how the play resulted.

vs Arizona:

4th & Goal: TD run by Squally

4th & 3: Incompletion to Pau'u



vs Cal:

4th & 1: 0 yard run by Huge

4th & 5: 11-yard sack on Mangum

4th & 9: 24-yard pass to Laulu-Pututau



vs McNeese:

4th & 3: Incompletion to Bushman



vs Washington:

4th & Goal: TD run by Katoa



vs Utah St:

4th & 1: Pick-6 on throw from Mangum intended for El-Bakri on a screen

4th & 6: Incompletion to Collie



vs Hawaii:

4th & 1: TD run by Katoa (12 yards)

4th & 1: 5-yard False Start Penalty

4th & 6: 26-yard TD pass to Romney (following Falst Start)



vs Northern Illinois:

4th & 4: 7-yard pass to Simon

4th & 7: 3-yard pass to Katoa



vs Boise St:

That's 21 attempts. Here's the breakdown:

9 were 4th & 1. BYU converted just 4 of them (2 were for TDs by Squally and Hadley). Three lost yards. One resulted in a defensive touchdown. One saw a false start (that BYU then converted on 4th & 6).



BYU attempted nine passes on 4th down and completed 6 of them, but of those 6 only 3 resulted in a first down.



21 attempts only 9 conversions, that's just a .428 conversion rate.



10 attempts on 4th & 2 or less with just 4 conversions.
