Does BCS apply to Basketball?

I keep seeing instances where basketball folks refer to the SEC or the PAC-0 as "BCS conferences" when it refers to basketball. This bother anyone else?



Last I checked, basketball doesn't have bowls...doesn't have any "series" but it does have Championship playoffs.



What makes this stereotyping worse is just how many MORE conferences in basketball there are (btw...Northern Iowa currently in the top 25. Pac-0? NONE) which makes referring to the "top-6" even more distasteful and grossly negligent.

just gives evidence to how insidious the whole malignancy that is the BCS has become in the conversation of all sports,and while it's really not even germaine to speak of the BCS in terms of college basketball as you've pointed out,it's gained enough traction to be a factor when the rankings and seedings are determined.Hence the BCS exerts it's unholy influence outside CFB,just the way they drew it up.

The only true "Big Boys" in NCAAB are the Big East and the ACC... possibly the Big 10.



The funny thing is how the Big East adds all of these teams to their conference that aren't even a part of their conference in football and other sports. Pretty pathetic that they'll do that just to make their conference look stronger.

I disagree, also SEC, Big XII and most years Pac 10, oh look that is the BCS.



SEC you have Kentucky, and Vanderbilt, and Tennessee.



Big XII Texas, and Kansas.



Pac 10 most years the 2 AZ schools represent.



So YES I do think BCS has HUGE impact on Mens BBall, as BCS Conf, don't spend all that money on Football, they spend a lot on Basketball also.

Well, ask yourself this: If we were in any of the "Big 6" conferences with the same record that we have now, would we be ranked higher? I think the answer is a definite "yes."

This has bothered me since the first time I heard a BBall game called and they kept referring to the one team as a BCS school and the other as a mid-major. I once heard one talking head correct another for calling the team from a BCS conference but everyone just laughed and the discussion kept on as if it were just a joke.

I have not heard them in BB call a team from, say the SEC, a BCS team, but way too often I hear announcers talk about a BCS conference team in BB as being from a "power" conference and then talk about a team like BYU or Gonzaga being from a mid major conference...WTH? We are not even from an upper major conference....

Kentucky, Vandy, and Tennessee are rarely all good at once. SEC struggles in college hoops.



Texas is rarely great. This season is a huge exception for them. Kansas... that's just one team.



Even when both AZ schools are repesenting, that's just two teams.



And let's face it, most/many conferences have 1 or 2 really good teams each year. It's obvious that the rankings are a bit biased though... not nearly to the level that College Football rankings are.... but still biased.



But the conferences in NCAAB are very balanced IMO. This is why you see a LOT more upsets in college basketball than you do college football.

I remember an interesting graphic last year. It consisted of a series of bar graphs indicating how many teams from non-AQ football conferece were given at large bids each year. I don't recall the exact numbers, but it went something like this:



1999: 10

2000: 12

2001: 11

2002: 11

2003: 8

2004: 9

2005: 7

2006: 7

2007: 6

2008: 4

2009: 3



The data (not my guesses above but the actual accurate data) show a clear trend.

THAT is the reason, NOT because you play 3x more basketball games than you do football. ;)

I should mention that although I do believe that there is some bias, it is a lot less than that of college football (plus, it doesn't matter as much as college football, since you just have to make the big dance).
