BYU's shifting recruiting strategy

I heard on the radio, right as I was getting in, so I didn't catch all the details, so if anyone can listen to the ESPN 960 podcast and clarify any details I'd appreciate it. But the gist is Ben and Mitch we're talking about BYU and how they can't afford to waste time recruiting 3 and 4 star recruits and need to focus on 2 star kids who want to be at BYU.

Good football players aren't smart enough. We need the bad football players who can get a C grade average.

Is this just Ben and Mitch's opinions or is this actually a real thing? BYU isn't wasting their time with 3 and 4 star players. Those are the players EVERY team wants to recruit. The 2 star guys who "want" to be at BYU will always be available to BYU so why wouldn't you shoot for the star and go for the 4 star kid. Right now it would seem BYU doesn't currently have the coaches on staff to develop a 2 star talent into a 4 star player. This is the wrong approach.

Yes Bronco said that but even Bronco still recruited those 3 and 4 star players. And yes Bronco made it work with some of those 2 star and walk on players but even Bronco missed on a few. Zigy only became a starter because of injury. Micheal Davis is playing corner back for the Chargers when he couldn't get playing time for BYU under Bronco.

You want to win you have to recruit the best players available. If the best players BYU can recruit is only 2 star players prepare yourselfes for a lot of losing seasons. 2 star players don't consistently beat P5 schools.

I almost spit my drink all over the computer screen. This year's class has 9 of 16 verbal commits as 3-star guys. I can't see coaches abandoning those guys to chase 2 stars who pretty much if you want them you can get them.

Uh, Michael Davis was a starter for Bronco for 2 years. He lost his starting job when Sitake took over.

Today Ben and Mitch talked about this very thing and how there was a Utah based 3/4* OL prospect who just committed to Washington, but he wanted BYU and recruited BYU but BYU offered a 2* kid for that position instead.



Now, we can only trust that the coaching staff evaluated these two players and determined that the higher rated prospect was a bad fit for BYU despite being an LDS athlete with good academics. That's what I'm hoping for.

The BYU prospect being talked about would appear to be Bruce Mitchell (South Summit HS) since he is the only 2 star offensive lineman on the commit list. I tried to find someone on the Washington commit list who is from Utah as an OL but can't find one. Of course it may be tough to say it came down to one or the other and they picked the two-star guy since Mitchell committed back in June of this year. http://byuinsider.com/football/bruce-mitchell/

I believe Caleb Christensen was a 2-star recruit who was upgraded to 3 stars the day after he committed to us.

He is a DB though so would not be who they were referring to.
