Will we get an 8 team playoff soon?

Good. We need a playoff system that allows an undefeated team to have access.

If the 8-team CFP expansion happens AND includes an automatic bid for the top G5 champion (or the top 6 conference champions), BYU needs to seriously re-evaluate independence.



In that scenario (and ONLY if there is the G5/top-6 autobid), Tom Holmoe needs to get on the phone with Mike Aresco from the AAC and talk about western expansion that includes BYU, Boise, and Gonzaga and probably 2 or 3 other western schools.



That would make BYU football nationally relevant again and be a huge upgrade for men's basketball.

In my opinion, with an 8 team playoff, the P5 conferences should only get one team each. They already have an automatic bid. And any team who didn't win their own conference obviously isn't the best team in the country. 5 out of the 8 slots is plenty. The other 3 should go to the best G5 teams. But I'm afraid what we'll see is 7 slots going to P5 teams with a bone being thrown to the G5 teams in the form of the lowest seeded team.

AAC and MWC each should place their champion in it.

I'm fine with the current system. I'll be fine with an 8 team playoff. Top 6 conference champs and 2 at large is fine with me. Home games for the top 4 seeds the week after CCGs are played. Then the current CFP/NY6 structure plays out.



I don't think BYU should just join a conference because of a better chance of a playoff invite. TV access, money, exposure are all more important factors to consider. Quite frankly, I couldn't care less about a playoff invite until we are actually good enough to win it (or at least do some damage). We should build schedules where we can regularly win 10 games and finish ranked. Once we master that we can worry about the playoff.

If we finish with 3 or 4 losses, we will not be in any playoff discussion unless the playoff expands to 32 or more.



As it stands now, if we join any non P5 conference we will have to take a pay cut and we are confined to a specific region. We can't play games at Washington, Wisconsin, and Massachusetts in the same year like we do now. We also would be subject to the conference TV deal which may not be as friendly to BYUtv. This hurts exposure.



The upside of joining a conference is greater bowl certainty and potentially an easier schedule than what we have now which could translate to more wins.



However, we could choose to be smart with our scheduling and play Utah, one other Pac-12 team a year, and one other P5 team a year, with the rest being FCS and G5. This would give us all the benefits of playing an easier conference schedule without being confined to a region and sacrificing our TV money.



Unfortunately, our admins feel that we need to schedule 5 or more games against P5 teams. In any given year about 2/3 of P5 teams win 7 games or more. Our record vs. those teams since 1972 against such teams is an abysmal 22-60-1. On the road we are 5-27 against such teams with only 2 wins in the last 20 years. We are skipping a step as a program. We need to schedule for wins instead of scheduling for a playoff.

Do away with the conference championships and include that week in the tournament. I suppose you can keep the conference championships but teams shouldn't be able to qualify without playing on conference championship weekend.



Clemson, UCF, and UW should all have been playing better teams on CCG weekend. ND, Michigan, FL, LSU, Penn St, Wash St, and Kentucky should have been playing someone that weekend rather than in a bowl game a month later.
