NCAA violation report is official for BYU. Lost a scholarship. Vacating wins

Ouch.



BYU voluntarily offered to reduce 1 scholarship, kick the primary booster out, and pay a pittance of a fine, and the NCAA still went after vacating wins, recruiting restrictions, and probation beyond that offering.



I guess we know why Rose was firming up recruits in the pre-season when you'd generally expect him to be focused on the upcoming season--trying to get in all the recruiting he could before these restrictions were imposed.

The vacating of 47 wins is top-10 is largest win-vacating penalties in NCAA history.



Jackson stepped up and wrote checks to the boosters to reimburse for the benefits his little bro was taking -- ~$10K.



Drops Dave Rose from 329 wins to 282. I think we now know why his contract extension was done just before the season instead of after this turd dropped in the punch bowl.

I told you all that big penalties were forthcoming. This really should be no surprise. Emery really screwed the program and Dave Rose who has gone from 329 wins to 282. He may not reach 300 wins for his career now, if things go really off rails.

Vacating wins is such a stupid penalty. I get he broke a rule or multiple rules, but the punishment doesn't seem to fit the crime in my book.

Also--congratulations to the 2016-17 Gonzaga Bulldogs for completing an undefeated regular season.

That ended in 2008 with the volleyball debacle.

My bet is that Emery taking the year off so that he was outside NCAA jurisdiction for most of the investigation, and then BYU welcoming him back had a lot to do with the severity of this punishment.



If BYU would have suspended him for that year and kept him in school during the investigation or even just kicked him off the team and not allowed him back, I think the NCAA treats this much differently. Instead, BYU and Emery tried to get cute.

Worse case scenario for a self-reporting violation of this magnitude. Punishment yes, but you have to be consistent and BYU has one of the top reputations for non-violation of all schools out there. This tells other schools to do what you can to hide infractions because there will be hell to pay.



At the same time, shame on those boosters who have caused such a black mark on BYU. I'm of the opinion of others, I'd revoke Emery's opportunity to play college ball. He knew better and now live your consequences. I don't hate the kid and I hope his Instagram message this week was sincere, but to cause this level of punishment on your university, bye-bye.



I wish they would print the names of these boosters. Their names need to be know for the same they caused so they suffer equal punishment for such a crime.

Emery is literally the worst thing to ever happen to BYU basketball. I’m seriously considering sitting out the team as a fan until he’s gone. His selfish play on the court doesn’t even hold a candle to the screw job he did to Coach Rose and the program. Funny that the Lone Peak 3 were supposed to bring greatness to the school and program. Mika Bolts after 2 years. Emery does his selfish stunt and here we are looking at the program being at its lowest point ever. Fate is a funny thing

You're conflating 2 issues. A history of major violations was cited as an aggravating factor. This is a bad thing because several Level II violations (which are major) were found out as part of this investigation as well as the volleyball issue in 2008.



The self reported 52 Level III violations (which are minor) contributed as a mitigating factor. This is a positive thing. This shows that BYU is eager to be compliant, and in theory made the punishment less severe. It didn't put BYU in a worse light.

Hindsight is always 20/20, but man, if BYU had any indication that this was coming they should have never let Emery back on the team.

I wasn't much of a fan of the ncaa before but this is over the top. I agree, if Emery goes and it would solve the problem then maybe he should go. Did we have to give up games that were played before Emery and this booster pulled this off? It's too bad the whole thing happened.



I just went in to the BYU sight. It is worth the read, but I don't know how to put it on here. It appears that BYU is paying a heavier price than others who have had similar events. This could put the program in jeopardy.

They knew.



I knew, and I'm not BYU with the resources and access they have. If I knew, there is no excuse for them not to know.



As Sno said, BYU tried to get really cutesy and say "poor nick emery sat out for a year, isn't that punishment enough?!" And just like any organization that knows when they're getting screwed they said going on vacation for a year isn't a punishment. This is a punishment.

If this were true no institution would ever self report anything again. If the institution is punished for policing itself AND turning them self’s in, then the solution is simple. Police yourself but never ever turn yourself in. Make the NCAA prove everything
