The Last Play

On the post game show, Hadley was interviewed and asked about what was talked about during the final timeout / final play call. He said that throwing the ball away was mentioned, but he also said the play was a pass play with the option for the qb to run.

In my opinion that is putting too much on Wilson. It should have been a pass play only with a quick read and a throw away if nothing is there.

Additionally, the play design was terrible. How do you only have 2 receivers? Of course they didn’t get open because there was just the two of them. Also by not lining up with 5 receivers, most of the defense was right there in the middle to easily pressure and snuff out any run attempt by Wilson.

We ran 4 plays at the end of the game from the 5 yard line or closer. We did not take any shots at the endzone in any of those plays. We also did not run downhill in any of those plays. That’s terrible play design and terrible play calling.

Let’s not forget when earlier in the game in the red zone, they brought in Jaren Hall for a qb run and then brought back in Wilson for a qb run. That completely killed that drive. It’s like those Beau Hoge sweeps early in the game against Cal. We get near the endzone and Grimes loses his mind in play calling decisions.

Grimes tried to get a bit too tricky on the last series. I can see why.

If you're an OC and you're watching your OL get blown up anytime BSU rushes, you take note. Wilson was scrambling all night. In the 1st half alone we made it to the red zone 3 - 4 times only to be turned away with Wilson on his back half the time. OL couldn't hold a block. Wilson had no time to throw. Given all that, what would you have done?

So, keeping it on the ground makes sense. Now, sweeps, probably not so much, but again BSU was getting through the middle. Grimes probably tried to get a bit too cutesy and over thought it. If he was going to run it, get in an I formation and hand the ball to Squally.

Boise was crushing our OL and blowing up our QB all game long, and Grimes waited until the last drive to call a screen?

I've been giving him a pass all year, because he's new to his position, but not after last night. Play-calls sucked. OL sucks. Red zone offense is beyond awful.

And the worst part is, no matter how bad BYU plays or what their record will be, we'll likely have this coaching staff for another year.

If we are stuck with Sitake for another year, it would be a bad move to get a new OC.

If the last play called was a pass but run option. Then going to a five receiver set and spreading things out give options to pass but if run more chance to find a seam to run it in? The play with basically one receiver and all packed in the middle was ugly. Sigh

Typical of an ARod offense. Apparently of a Grimes offense too.

never should have come down to last play. BYU should have hung 35 on the ponies of west Idaho.

This was my thinking as well... BYU left way too many points on that field.

Also one thing that is clear to me is that we have an O Line coach that is in over his head. It seems to me that there's enough film on the OLine that other coaches have figured them out. BYU needs to correct this quickly

Wilson said in his press conference that the coaching staff never said if the play wasn't there to throw the ball away and have another shot. It all came down to that play.

Really, that's pretty lame. He isn't smart enough to think that up on his own? Not saying the coaching staff shouldn't have told him to do just that, but come on. Man up and say you screwed up and should have thrown it away.

I think we might be discovering why Grimes was passed over so many times in the past at VaTech and LSU when he was on staff and they hired outside coordinators or promoted other assistants to OC instead of giving him the reins.

LSU’s offense was nonexistent last Saturday

I'm certainly not in the mood to defend any of them... SO I guess that I should say that the O Line coach is even worse than the other coaches.

The O-Line is the most puzzling thing about this season. Given Grimes' excellent history while he was here the first time, his young but trusted OL coach, and the great work of the OL against Wisconsin, why is the line so stinking inconsistent?

I have no idea. The only thing I can think of is that there's something systemic about the culture and work ethic when he was here the first time that isn't present now. That may be unfair speculation as I have no evidence except the puzzling product on the field.

hmm...

Who to believe? If Grimes didn't tell Wilson to do a quick slant with 7 seconds I think he should be fired immediately. Second play should involve a "run it" option, but not the first.

Criddle states that several o lineman got engaged recently?

Ha Ha. Only at BYU.
