Holmoe a "wizard" in scheduling BYU football

Saw this tweet which makes a lot of sense to me:

I think he's over-selling some of the opponents -- SDSU? USU? Houston? USF? Mizzou?



Those aren't really teams that move the needle nationally much more than the teams we are hosting this year.

Mmm, scheduling would be one of my biggest criticisms of Holmoe.

I wish the Hawaii series had worked out. That was a bummer. Other than that, things have worked out reasonably well.



The timing of opponents bye weeks needs to be addressed.



BYU faces three teams coming off bye weeks this year - USU, NIU, NMst - while only facing one team while coming off a bye week - NIU. This is a distinct disadvantage that Holmoe needs to address.



In 2017 BYU faced 3 teams coming off byes (Boise, Ms St, SJSU) and Utah had a long week to prepare. BYU faced on team coming off a bye.



In 2016 BYU faced 3 teams coming of byes (WV, TOledo, UMass) and Utah had a long week to prepare. BYU faced one team coming off a bye.



In 2015 BYU faced 2 teams coming off byes (Cincinatti and SJSU) and Mizzou had a long week to prepare. BYU faced one team coming off a bye.



I would like to see this trend reversed. Holmoe should be scheduling Week 0 games using the Hawaii rule to get an extra bye week. We should also try to make use of conference championship weekend to get an extra bye. Try to schedule ND at neutral sites that week or play UMass, Liberty, or NM State that week to free up time before big games.



If Holmoe can't do that he should stipulate in contracts that the opposing team has to schedule a team the week prior to the game with BYU.



Other than that I don't think things have been too bad.

How often does BYU (or any other team) have more than one bye in a year? How does an athletic director (for any team) know for sure, at the time a contract is signed, what bye weeks any opponent will have at a given distant date in the future - especially since most conferences don't plan the conference slate too far in advance? How does an athletic director force the bye date issue while negotiating with another AD?

If BYU was continually a top 25 program, there would be more interested in the games. Wouldnt matter really who came to town. If the product on the field was consistently good and entertaining, people would watch. Look at Boise.

Most teams get one per year. MWC teams often get two because of the Hawaii rule. Holmoe needs this stipulation for MWC games otherwise BYU will continue to get hosed. MWC schedules league games after BYU games are scheduled so they could arrange things to give byes before every game against BYU.



BYU could have up to three if they play a week 0 game and a game the first weekend of December which would have happened every year if we hadn't lost the Hawaii series.

Ah, yes. The Glenn Beck method of arguing with questions to try and convert the burden of supporting your argument into your opponent's burden to answer questions even you don't know the answer to.
