Out of the way early: There are NO "Sunday-Only" SEEDS!!!

Thought I'd get this out of the way early. Simple recycle of an old post from last year:



Gentlemen and Ladies,

There seems to be ongoing confusion and misinformation regarding the seeds BYU can and can't receive due to their No-Play-on-Sundays choice.



There are four sectional (first-weekend) sites, also called "pods," that are Thursday-Saturday sites.

BYU can be given ANY SEED, and still play in ANY of those sites.



There are ALSO two regional (second-weekend) sites that are Thursday-Saturday sites.

BYU can play in EITHER of those sites.



HERE'S WHY:

Seeds are not determined until Selection Sunday, AND the locations that teams play in the first round are ALSO not decided until Selection Sunday.



Further, the regional sites that a sectional winner feeds into are ALSO not determined until Selection Sunday. I.E. Sectional Sites are not tied to Regional sites yet. UNTIL SELECTION SUNDAY, no one Sectional Site is guaranteed to feed into any Regional site in particular.



This is why BYU can still get ANY seed, and still be placed in ANY of the Sectional Sites that play on Thursday-Saturday, and EITHER of the Regional Sites that play on Thursday-Saturday.



Now, I know peoples' arguments are that their favorite Bracketologist says all 6 seeds are playing at a F-Su site, and will also feed into a F-Su regional, so that means BYU can't be a 6 seed.

THIS IS INCORRECT.

The bracketologists are guessing just as much as anyone about which Sectional Sites will be hosting which "seeding-foursomes," and which Regional Site those Sectional winners will feed into.



So just in case ANYONE still doesn't get it:

AS OF RIGHT NOW, AND UNTIL SELECTION SUNDAY, BYU CAN STILL BE ANY SEED, REGARDLESS THEIR NO-SUNDAY CHOICE.

Well, thank you for the vote of confidence. I was thinking about asking the mods for that in the post, myself. I decided against it since I thought that sounded a bit presumptuous.

Could you repeat the middle part? :D

This is why BYU must get a high seed. If they don't get a high seed then their seeds are indeed limited. For instance, if BYU were to be a #1 seed, they would obviously be put into a Th-Sat opening region that would then feed into a Th-Sat Sweet 16/Elite 8 region. If BYU doesn't get a high enough seed where they can force the Selection committee to properly schedule them, that's where they start getting dropped in their seeding so they can stay with their no-Sunday play policy.



The easiest solution is for the Selection Committee to simply keep all the seeds that play Th-Sat that first weekend to also play Th-Sat the second weekend.

Interesting idea, except our no-Sunday-play "issue" isn't actually the hardest one they have to deal with (though everyone, including members of the committee talk like it's the end of the world). Not even near it. The reason they went to the pod system a few years back is that they needed a way to keep two teams from entitled (read: consistently being handed more than 6 teams in the tourney) conferences from meeting each other in the 2nd or 3rd round, or what ever the rule is. Being able to mix-n-match which pod winner goes to which regional gives them more options for team placement.
