Emery and Fredette's illness

I think that Fredette's illness has shown us that Emery is the heart and soul of this team. And possibly our most important player. We have lots of talent and several capable scorers but what Emery brings by guarding the other teams best player. He also makes several important baskets, run starting and run stopping.

Not quite sure I agree. With Fredette we have someone who could drop 40 on an opponent in March. Someone who opposing defenses must account for. Emery is a complimentary player. I think they are both better with each other on the court and I don't like seeing BYU trying to win without either of them.

I suppose that begs the question, is the most important player on a team the one who scores the most points?



i'd argue that often that's the case, but not always.

Just put it this way; the heart and soul of this team are our three guards. Those three guys (Fredette, Emery and Haws) are why BYU is 17-1. I wouldn't want to play any game without all three.



Out big guys are improving, and may be the difference in some future games, but right now, we win because of these three guys.

Heart and soul of this team:



Coach Rose.



That is why this team is so good regardless of who's on the court, and why, if he is still around, we will be great in the future.

I would also like to add that Fredette and Emery are both Juniors. I think BYU could have one of the best backcourts in the country next year.

Emery is more like Travis Hansen than any player we've had than Travis Hanson. He would be the heart and soul of most teams, but we are lucky enough to have coach Rose and a couple of other guards to share that honor. This is an amazing team, both in talent, and in character. We have yet to see the best of them. :) :)

I think, what it really shows is that we have a lot of talent in our three guard, Fredette, Emery, and Haws. Emery is possibly the best athlete on the team, but Fredette has the vision, and that intangible deceptiveness that makes him extremely tough to guard. Haws is probably the most pure shooter we've ever had.



I agree with an earlier post- the heart and soul is Coach Rose, and he has a group here (all of them not just the guards) that embody his spirit, and have fully engaged in his system. I'm very excited for this team, and teams to come.

I guess I'm in agreement with Qman. While Emery isn't our best scorer or rebounder or passer, he is the best reflection of Coach Rose out on the floor. If we get in a tight spot sometime and the players huddle up, I bet Emery is the one who says what needs to be said. Definitely the heart of the team in my book.



That doesn't mean that Fredette and Haws aren't excellent as well. Too bad Haws will be gone next year, because this will be a very good team without him, but would be really special with him. His shot seems so effortless. For my money, he is the smoothest shooter at BYU since Bobby Capener, the best shooter I have personally seen in the Blue and White.

Hmm...from my perspective Jimmer lights up the team with his play and "cheer leading." He's animated, pumping his fists, yelling, high fiving and clapping to get the team fired up.



That said, I get the impression what Emery says on the court is followed. He's the leader.

The other point I was trying to make was if Emery goes down we're screwed. If Fredette goes down we have less capable replacements but they can fill his role.

Not sure I agree with this either. Abouo is an excellent defender and Loyd is no slouch either.

I think i have to weigh in on Kitic's side on this one.Jimmer is an elite player who can get his own shot,and we simply don't usually have that kind of player.I think that if people think we go deep in the tourney without the Jammer,because we've won a couple of games without him during the regular season,they're kidding themselves.That said, Jackson's offense is obviously seriously underrated and without queston he's the best pure athlete on the team,and the best defender in the conference, end of story.as Kitic said we finally have several really good on-ball defenders,who can shut down the opponents best and next best scorers,namely Charles and MIchael Loyd.

I'm Kitic and I endorse this agreement with my opinion. ;)



I especially agree with the under-appreciation of Jackson's offensive game. He's increased his PAP from .491 to .524. His defensive is outstanding this year. He only has one fewer steal than he had all of last year. BYU might just have the best offensive and defensive player in the league. They also have the best coach and best freshman. Unfortunately, they're also BYU. If this was any other school I could see a clean sweep of Player of the Year, Defender of the Year, Coach of the Year and Freshman of the Year. But since it's BYU they're not allowed to get all the conference accolades. In fact, I fully believe there is a concerted effort to not reward BYU commensurate with their accomplishments.

That is probably true for all of the teams. Hair wants to build the image of the conference so you can't be a one team league. With that said, what happened in football? Did TCU get them all? I know they got a lot but they were the best.

TCU got offensive, defensive and special teams players of the year and coach of the year. Everything but freshman of the year. The Utes won three of five in 2008. The MWC has an anti-BYU bias and I have yet to see anything to convince me otherwise and much to convince me of it.

Both are also capable on offense. Before the season, everyone was wondering how we would replace Lee's production, and saying that Emery was a good defender, but couldn't provide the fire power we need. We all know how that went. These guys could step up if called on and given more playing time to get comfortable.

They are pretty good back ups, who would be starting on a lot of teams.
