The MWC Adds the Independence Bowl

MWC #3 vs ACC #7?



Guaranteed win for the MWC every year. Why do these conferences like the PAC10 and ACC set themselves up to lose in the postseason?

So the last few editions of this bowl would have been:

2009: North Carolina (8-5) v Utah (10-3)

2008: Wake Forest (8-5) v BYU (10-3)

2007: Florida State (7-6) v New Mexico (9-4)

2006: Clemson (8-5) v Utah (8-5)

2005: NC State (7-5) v Colorado State (6-6)

2004: Clemson (6-5) v BYU (5-6)

2003: Wake Forest (5-7) v Colorado State (7-6)

2002: Wake Forest (7-6) v Air Force (8-5)



I would call most of those matchups fairly even with maybe a bit of an advantage to the MWC most years. Of course the bowl would be played in the ACC's backyard so the crowd would be mostly fans of the ACC teams who travel very very well (I tried to get a hotel 40 miles away from Clemson during a home-game weekend this year and had a tough time finding an open room).



All told, I think this will make for some great bowl games.

Poinsettia - San Diego, CA - $1,000,000

Are you taking into account years that an MWC team went to the BCS--on those year, the Independence Bowl would get MWC #4? The past two years, Air Force would probably have been in the Independence Bowl as the BYU, TCU, and Utah would have been taken by the BCS, LV Bowl, and Poinsettia Bowl.

No, you're right--I made a mistake in transferring the payouts. The SD Union Trib reports the Poinsettia Bowl pays each team $500,000 guaranteed plus 40% of revenues. Other places have reported a payout of $750,000, but the discrepancy might be in the percentage of revenue--who knows.

Good get for the MWC. It's a nice payout, considering what else we have.

I like the fact that we get to play an SEC team. I'd prefer the #4 or #5 ACC team, but still a good get. If the MWC can just add a better bowl for the Conference Champ, should they not get a BCS bid, then I am happy with this. If the LV Bowl was for #2 each year, then Independence, then Poinsettia, I;d be really happy.

At the very least, it's another mid-tier bowl to reward our bowl worthy conference brethren. I don't see how you'd consider Louisiana in the ACC's "backyard" exactly. TCU, New Mexico and the front range schools are just about as close as any ACC school.



The LV Bowl and Poinsettia Bowl have to step up with their payouts if they want to continue to host the top two MWC conference schools. There is no reason the MWC #3 pick should get more money than the #1 or #2.



I'm so tired of hearing about teams who "don't want to be there" at the bowls. So I'm in favor of giving the winner of each bowl a 66-75% cut of the pot. I'm so tired of hearing that "Oregon State" didn't want to be there (admittedly, we didn't hear this a lot out of those associated with the OSU program this year but that didn't stop the pundits from making the excuse for them), but then they get an equal of the money despite getting destroyed on the field. Maybe taking a hit to the pocketbook would encourage them to "want to be there" a little more.

Where did you get these numbers?

I actually thought the New Mexico bowl only paid out like $375K.

His figures include both "over the table" numbers as well as "under the table" - but they don't include the payoffs to the refs.... :whistle:

The list is just ACC #7 vs. MWC #3 to get a rough feel for types of matchups that could happen in the future. It doesn't include any of the changes that could occur due to BCS busting. You'll notice that I included several teams that were not even bowl eligible that year.

As long as ACC refs aren't at the game I'm okay with it.

Up until this year, I didn't really buy the idea that teams wouldn't be pumped up for a last chance at glory, no matter what the bowl game. But this year I could barely watch some of the games because one team was so obviously disinterested. And, I don't know how much the players care about how the pot is split (although the coaches and ADs would). How about this for an idea, if it isn't one of the billion things prohibited by NCAA rules: the swag bags that all the bowls hand out to the players and coaches. They are filled with electronic gadgets, gift cards, etc. What if only the winning team got them?
