Merril Hoge not happy with BYU coaching staff

Merril calls out Ed Lamb and the BYU coaching staff for what he considers to be boneheaded decisions regarding his son.

Parents really should just stay away from the media while their children play.

The subject of concussions did not come up in interview from what I heard. Beau wants to play QB.

If you listen to the interview, he says nothing about injury risk. His beef is (a) it was Lamb who talked with Beau, not Grimes or Roderick, (b) they didn't even let him compete for the QB spot, but they let every other nobody who thought they could be a QB compete for the job, (c) the way it went down felt slimy like they were trying to delay telling him about a decision that was already made to make it less likely that Beau would try to transfer.



Merril thinks Lamb is a shady, less-than-honest guy, and he made that clear. He thinks his kid is the best athlete capable of playing QB and deserved an honest chance to compete, not a run-around.



I don't think BYUSN had any idea this was going to be the path the interview would take -- this is not something BYU is going to want other schools to be sending to BYU recruits and their parents.

I'm sure his dad, is going to say, I'm fearful my son is going to get a concussion.



Why is Lamb making this call (to switch positions)? I know he's an assistant head coach, but he's also special teams and linebackers. How is he involved in running back and quarterback position changes?

Just one more thing to add to the long list of reasons this entire coaching staff should have been fired after last year. It sounds like they are still screwing things up.

He thinks highly of his kid but the stats don't support it. 52% completion and TD/INT 3/4. It is a small sample size and no doubt he could do better. But where was he on the depth chart? Chances of playing were not good at QB.

But Beau Hoge is totally going to start at QB now, right?

The point is, they forced a position change on a kid that didn't want it. As far as I know Bronco never forced a position change on a kid. He wouldn't make the kid do it if the kid didn't want to. IMO, that is the best way to handle things because then the kid is happy with what he is doing. How many other position changes were forced onto kids who didn't want it which caused bad play at that position? I don't know, I just feel that this is just one more thing that stinks about how this coaching staff is handling the team. I guess we will see how they perform on the field. If they start 0-5, which is a very real possibility, the season is going to be over.

If anything the QB position is far more dangerous to players than at the running back position.

No just the o-line and receivers coach. The o-line coach because the QBs spent too mush time running for their lives in stead of executing the play that was called. The receivers coach because the WRs lacked toughness, were incapable of getting open, and couldn't catch a cold let alone the football from dropping too many passes that were in the hands or the numbers.

If a kid doesn't want to change positions, take away his scholarship. It's not his team, he's not the coach, it's not all about him. The team comes first, like it or leave.

My only problem is the other parent on Twitter saying Merrill is right, and that Kalani isn't a good coach.

My issue is with the perception that the staff was shady about the position change--that they knew what they wanted to do but slow-rolled breaking it to a kid because they were afraid he might transfer somewhere else.



Having Lamb break the news was poor form as well -- not his position/offensive coach, and has a strong personal history with and publically expressed to the media what could be interpreted as bias in favor of Critchlow.



What's funny is that within 2 hours of the interview gaining traction, Derik Stevenson gets trotted out to all the talk shows to defend Kalani--he admits he knows nothing about the situation, and then proceeds to say nothing happened as Merril Hoge relayed it this morning. Kalani needs a better lap dog.



Also funny is how the football staff is trying desperately to bury the story on social media by retweeting a bunch of recruits' tweets from June....cuz that always works.

I know that we have a father defending his son. I would want to do the same thing. It does make Merrill hoge look petty and like the little league father. Having said that, this is just more smoke that is the coaching disaster fire that we have right now. I hope I am wrong and I will be cheering the team all year hoping for a good season but this just stinks.

It's actually very funny. Like "how stupid are you?" funny. His dad is a national sports guy - honestly how many of those do we ever get around here? If you're not giving the kid special treatment by virtue of his dad in relation to his position, you at least owe him transparency in the process. If you bungle that, then you know that his dad has a voice and has people who listen.



If you don't have Grimes or Roderick break the news to protect them from dad's ire - then at least have the actual head coach involved.



It's all a small thing that dies of its own accord very soon, but it's certainly an indication that Kalani and Co are still quite clueless. Good luck to them. I think there are a few of them looking for new employment in December

Papa Hoge did his son a disfavor going on the air to air his grievances. If he has a legitimate gripe, then going to the coach may be a possibility, but who thinks this rantfest will help his son one iota? Stupid move through and through.
