Iowa going too far in trying to eliminate discrimination?

This is an interesting read about the University of Iowa deregistered 40 student clubs, 25% of which were religious, for failing to adopt the school's non-discrimination policy. The most prominent club in the story required those applying for leadership in the club to affirm the Christian group's statement of faith, which included the claim that only married, heterosexual couples should have sex. This was deemed in violation and the club was deregistered. They have since filed a lawsuit under the free speech clause and religion clauses. A federal court judge ordered the group temporarily re-registered noting inconsistencies in how the University of Iowa applied its human rights rules.



At least one other Christian group has also filed a lawsuit. It will be interesting to see where this goes.

Had teacher refresher training again today. They reminded us that government employees really do not have any rights to free speech. Say something anywhere to anyone about anything you don't like or agree with, and you can absolutely be fired for it legally.

The only difference is public versus private sectors.



Those who work for the government occasionally make the mistake of taking the Second Amendment literally. But Freedom of Speech doesn't protect anyone from consequences, or give anyone the right to having a consequence-free opinion.
