All BYU Hoopsters Just Declared for 2019 NBA Draft

If there is no cost/risk to declaring for the draft, why not?

What irks me is that they only made the change for mens' basketball.



Shouldn't these changes be across the board for all student athletes in every sport, male and female? Makes it apparent that the NCAA cares less about doing the right thing and more about the PR fallout of the AAU/Nike/Adidas scandals.

Agree 100%. It was a must needed rule change, but it should be for ALL sports as you said. The NCAA cares way more about $$ than the welfare of the student athlete.

how many sports have drafts or pro-leagues? It was already the de-facto rule for the NCAA in most sports already. Baseball already had something very close to this. Football will always be different in that there is basically no such thing as a HS grad who has the body to play right away in the NFL.

Nope.

In baseball, there is no such thing as "declaring for the draft". The MLB teams can draft anything with a pulse regardless of declarations or intentions. But, if a HS or NCAA player retains an agent, they lose their eligibility from that point going forward. That's not the case for hoops players under the new rules. They can hire agents with certain restrictions to guide them through the pre-draft process and remain eligible if they are not drafted.

So, what would it have hurt to make the rules across the board for football players? We aren't just talking about kids going from HS to the NFL. We are talking about a kid declaring for the draft after his RS junior year as well--anyone other than a kid who has used up all his eligibility. There were 37 NCAA underclassmen who declared early for the 2018 draft (and 25+ for the 2017 draft) who ended up going undrafted. Why should they not be able to return to school for another season like the men's hoopsters?





And all of that ignores the fact that this only applies to the boys -- the girls wanting to go to the WNBA don't have the same latitude either....

This rule doesnt apply to BYU players. It states that you have to be good to be eligible.
