Coaching Change

As a bronco fan I am curious to see your reaction to the following question:



Would you welcome a change in head coach if the new coach was Chris Petersen?



I think you are very loyal to Mendenhall, but religion aside, what is your opinion of Petersen at BYU?



The reason I ask is because with all the Kiffin stuff and coaching news lately it seems like anybody will drop a job in one second if they can make more money somewhere else. I don't think mendenhall is that type of guy and I know petersen is not. Sometimes fans however, would welcome a change no matter what if it is an improvement and could get you great results quickly.



I am obviously biased and very proud of BSU's coaching staff but I want to see if other fans are as loyal as we are to their coaches.

Petersen is obviously a good coach and a great fit at BSU. That being said, Bronco is also a very good coach and a great fit for BYU. Both coaches do their thing and are able to work differently at different schools. I would like Bronco to stay at BYU as long as he wants to, and when he decides to leave, I hope another good coach (Petersen would be fine with me from what I know of him) comes in to take his place.

Nope - Bronco is the right person for BYU. Peterson might do a good job as well, but not a better job than Bronco.

I don't think a non-LDS would be seriously considered for the job. I respect the BSU program and their coaches, but Bronco is the right fit right now.

Forget Peterson, Bronco knows what he is doing i hope he stays for at the very least 5 more years.

If BYU was only about winning football games, then yes.



However, BYU football is MORE about representing the values of the university and church. For that reason, BYU will never hire a head football coach who isn't a recommend holder.

I'm from eastern Idaho and have never liked BSU--not a Vandals fan either, but between them and the Broncos, I'd cheer for U of I any day of the week and twice on Sunday.



That said, ignoring religious considerations per your OP, I think I'd enjoy Peterson as coach at BYU--it would make for a interesting change of pace. Coach Mendenhall, like Coach Edwards, is consistently conservative. When any tactical decision must be made, you can make a chart to predict how Mendenhall or Edwards would decide and probably be right 98% of the time.



Having a less predictable coach would be fun, as long as BYU would still win consistently as BSU has shown it can do. The last guy that we had that was willing to roll the dice like Peterson does had too much madness and not enough method. Plus Peterson seems to realize the importance of good defense and that the best way to help out the defense is to have an offense that not just scores points, but moves that chains and eats up clock time as well.



Of course, this is coming from someone who wouldn't mind either Patterson and Calhoun at BYU. Though like many here, I count my blessings that Whittingham decided to stay a Utah man.

With all due respect, you simply can't put religion aside. It is such a part of the job that until proven otherwise, I simply don't think anyone on the planet can manage it as well as Bronco. Dealing with missionaries alone is a HUGE burden. Bronco has found a great balance. Also, he wants to be at BYU. With Petersen, I'd expect he would be much more likely to bolt for "better" jobs eventually.

I think Petersen is a fantastic coach and as a fan of any college team in the country I would like to have him as a head coach, except at BYU, where like many others have already pointed out the job deals with so much more than just winning football games. However, I would seriously consider bringing him in as an offensive coordinator (which is not meant to disrespect his abilities at all, but rather to point out that at BYU that's where he could do the most good).

wth? Who writes this crap?! I want Bronco at BYU as long as he wants wit hteh results we get from him, I am loyal to him, his methods and his staff. Sorry, but his last 5 years have been exceptional, not just good. Exceptional. In 2-3 years, we will be BCS regulars, and you fools questioning Bronco will finally be silenced. He is not perfect, but considering the limitations he has with the HC, he does a FANTASTIC job at BYU. Let's not act like Chris Peterson would maneuver the HC any better than Crowton did. His time at BSU says he would not based upon his recruits.

Believe it or not, I do not drink caffeine. Not because I am opposed, but because I have kidney issues that prevent it. So that was not a caffeine outburst. Was simply an anti-everything BSU does is better outburst. That crap makes me ill. Peterson is a great caoch, but he would not recruit at BYU as well as Bronco has, nor would he run the program here as well. Now if you want to talk about him as OC or the BSU O v. the BYU O scheme, let's talk.

I don't even think that this is the case. Had Petersen come in instead of Bronco, I think that we would have seen very similar results. I don't think he's any better a football mind than Bronco.

Thanks for the answers. I agree it takes a different type of person to coach at byu because of religion and honor code etc. I am impressed with what petersen has done and think it would be a different challange at byu.

I was at byu when crowton was coach and now living in Boise and could not disagree more. Petersen has an incredible ability to coach character, as does bronco. That is where crowton failed miserably.

Bronco great coach and perfect fit at BYU. Petersen great coach and a better fit at BSU than BYU. He would be very successful at BYU. The only edge that he might have is signing the top LDS recruits however I think Bronco will get there very very soon. I love the way Petersen get his team to EXECUTE.
