Anyone else not excited by Critchlow?



Mangum could be good with a major bounce-back season.



I like what I'm seeing out of Wilson for a freshman.

My best guess at this point:



QB1 - Tanner Mangum with a relatively short leash

QB2 - Critchlow

QB3-7: Who cares.

I will support whomever wins the job. I have no pre conceived biases on anyone. If I were to have any, I would like to see Tanner back to the form he had as a freshman.

I fully expect this to be the case.

I think the success Tanner had as a freshman was largely due to the receivers BYU had that year. So, I too would like to see some toughness and resolve to go get the ball like we saw 3 years ago. One of the terrible injustices of BYU football was watching T. Hill go down against Nebraska with the receiving corp he'd have had backing him up that year.

Honestly, I think we have some solid QBs in the house. It doesn't matter who gets the nod, just please please please don't have a weird team Riley/team Jake drama. Please. I just can't. Pick someone and get going with it. The #2 will need to be ready to roll. And #3-7 or whoever after that just needs to do anything supportive.



And I am a Stacy Conner fan. I want to see him at some point.

Oh, and the reason Joe Critchlow will start is because he went to the same high school as Ke$ha. That's as good a reason as any, right?

I think our offense is going to end up surprising a lot of people. I don’t see any of the qbs being prolific this year, but I think they will be competent. It won’t take much change offensively as a whole to be a drastic improvement over last year. And honestly if we had had even average offensive coaching the year before, we would have been 12-0. I am with Mars. Completely underwhelmed with Critchlow. The fact that he's a walk-on QB from SUU with no other offers means that a lot of brilliant football minds didn't see much in him. Nothing I saw last year made me revise that feeling.

Critchlow was on academic scholarship last year and was one of 2 walk-ons to be given a scholarship this year. That said, I'm not sure what purpose is served by denigrating players on the roster instead of just saying you like someone else better.

It's my understanding that Critchlow is still on academic scholarship.

No. They announced yesterday that he is now on a football scholarship along with El Bakri.

I was underwhelmed by all qbs last year. Was it the system or the qbs? Hard for me to tell.

If critchlow gives us wins, great, I'll cheer for him. Or Tanner. Or Wilson.

6 wins or fewer in 2018 would be a disappointment. That likely means BYU either loses to California or NIU at home or to UMass on the road. None of those results is acceptable. 7 wins is the floor for the season not to be a disappointment.



I get that we went 4-9 last year, but I'm not so jaded now that I don't expect us to grab 8 wins and at least contend for double-digit wins. Even with poor play and sub-par coaching last season, we had close games with Utah and 10-win Fresno St. We have loads of returning experience and skill on both sides of the ball.

My hope is that Tanner earns the helm and Zack is the man in waiting. I'd like to find some way to keep Critchlow because he's a good athlete.

I think Critchlow could develop into a quality pocket quarterback. Is the bolded statement about his athleticism based on personal experience with Critchlow or observation of his high school days? I have yet to see anything in a BYU game or practice to indicate that Critchlow is above-average athletically for a division 1 player. Granted, he hasn't really been asked to make plays based on his athleticism, but I haven't seen it yet.

Well you're a whole lot more optimistic than everyone I'm talking/listening to in media. Vegas had us at 5.5 wins and while I wouldn't be shocked if we won 7 games, it would be quite the accomplishment in my book.



You just never know how the season will play out injury wise. Last year we were hurt deeply by injuries. We have minimal injuries and that makes a whole lot of difference.
