Troy Calhoun leaving for Tennessee?

He's called a team meeting for 5:30 MT

The University of Tennessee is set to hire Air Force head coach Toby Calhoun as their next head football coach, according to sources. Calhoun will meet with his players at 5:50 p.m MT to tell them he has accepted the job at UT, according to the Colorado Springs Gazette.

The gazette is now saying Calhoun is staying!!!



He attended the Bball game last night and said this:



“

We are more than grateful and proud to be closely involved with the character building of our cadets and the mission of the United States Air Force Academy. We are diligently recruiting and working with our team to prepare for the upcoming season. We look forward to coaching and being a part of the Air Force Academy team both on and off the field in 2010.”

Of course it doesn't say anywhere he's staying or leaving. I'll update once he officially announces on camera

Now that would be a shame. Calhoun has done a great job at Air Force and is a great fit there. I would be genuinely disappointed to see him leave.

It will be nice to stop talk about finishing behind them next year though. :)

Imagine if he does and how then Bronco would have all of the SL media calling him to see if he was interested in the AFA job.

People thought Kiffin was a traitor--I think he's a quitter/bolter. But Calhoun is going to get some upset people in Colorado Springs

That is a complete departure from the fireworks and hollywood of Lane Kiffin and his staff.



Calhoun is not a name that will salvage Tennessee's recruiting class, but will clean up their program.

This is not a quick fix name... ("who is Troy Calhoun will be uttered a lot this week" and the answer should be "he's the guy that could beat Wyoming when we couldn't")



This feels a lot like when Steve Cleve went to Fresno State, but on a much much bigger scale (and a diff sport)



Is there something we don't know about Gary Patterson? Why is he never a serious candidate for these jobs? I'd scoop him up in a heartbeat

Darnit! That is too bad. Calhoun has done an amazing job at air force. I wish he would stay. i hate to see our mwc coaches bolt.



that said, are they going to start running the option at tennessee?

I'm thinking he'll need a heck of a lot of help to get things going. On Vol boards I've seen quite a few upset fans and some okay ones. So far I haven't seen anyone say anything nice about the option--I guess they don't know about G tech. I'll miss Troy because he's one of only 4 coaches (combining Bball and Football in the mwc) that people actually don't want to beat up and leave stranded in a desert with a bag of ugly frogs. Also, Utah barely beat him or lost each game.

Dang, I liked Troy.

I think he would have some success running the option in the SEC, at least at first. I doubt he will use it though. I think he'll run a pro set similar to what he and Mike Shanihan used together. Not that I am looking deep into anything to back this up, its just that looking at the surface, there is so much speed and size in teams like Florida, I think they learn the discipline of stopping the option, (like BYU) and there is less chance it succeeds for a long time. I could be wrong. There certainly have been some great option teams in the past in that same region.

He is awkward with the media. not a big progrm type of coach. he fits perfect at tcu.

So it's being reported in a couple places that Calhoun said that. Why hold a team meeting though? I guess you do that to help assistants that are leaving. Good news for AF if it's true.

I kind of thought coaching at the Academy was similar to coaching a BYU - part calling.

I guess since Tennessee lost their coach to the 'men of troy' (ie. USC) they will replace him with a guy named troy.

Lest anyone forget, Calhoun is not an option 1st guy. He came to the AFA and decided to leave the offense intact. He can coach a more traditional offense and apparently was high on UTs list last year. The problem is that nothing UT can do now will save their recruiting class aside from signing a ridiculously big name like Bill Cowher,etc.



Calhoun is a very safe option and would eventually build a winning program. He's just not a sexy pick and SEC and UT fans are very fickle... ask Phil Fulmer.

SEC fans are morons. Fact of the matter is that none of the "big name" coaches were huge names when they came to the SEC. And none of them were SEC guys either. Home grown players, not home grown coaches, except Spurrier.



Urban wasn't. Les Miles wasn't. Saban wasn't when he went to LSU. How bout Rich Brooks pre-retirement? Or Houston Nutt--from Boise to Arkansas? Dan Mullen had time at Florida before Miss State. Also had time at Utah, is from PA. Mark Richt was no SEC guy pre-Georgia.



Fact is, the best coaches in that league started at smaller schools first and moved up, and were not SEC assistants who got promoted, with a couple of exceptions. But those guys have not won anything yet, either.

ESPN says he is staying. Which to me seems the right decision. He ran the offense as the QB and it is the one he is most familiar with so changing to any other one would present difficulties and require a very steep learning curve (not to mention the experience that can't be rushed).
