Schools no longer will be able to block students from scholarship when transferring

New rules begin in October.



"This new system allows a student to inform his or her current school of a desire to transfer, then requires that school to enter the student’s name into a national transfer database within two business days. Once the student-athlete’s name is in the database, other coaches are free to contact that individual.

Additionally, the proposal adds tampering with a current student-athlete at another school to the list of potential Level 2 violations, considered a significant breach of conduct.

The problem is that NCAA stated that conferences could still apply their respective modifications to this new policy. It will be interesting how that shakes out and whether any will do anything in that regard.



"The Division I Council did warn that conferences can still place limitations “that are more restrictive than the national rule.” That’s unfortunate. The new rule should be universal – meaning every league should allow transfers without any limitations. But it’s a start."

Conferences, if they chose, can implement measures that would give coaches the power to deny transfers within the conference. Unless transfers become rampant, I don’t see any conference adopting such a measure.

Good thing BYU football isn't in a conference!
