I have even less respect for Heaps after reading this self-pitying article. "I was a guy that could have been an NFL draft pick had things gone differently", and reminding fans that his cowardly fumble against the Utes wasn't the only one in the game so they should just forget how awful his was.

One thing Jake Heaps definitely is not? A winner--he doesn't have the mental make-up to succeed in a competitive environment where things are not handed to you.

Ugh, only thing I'm more tired of than rehashing the Jake Heaps era is rehashing the Bronco Mendenhall/Kalani Sitake comparisons.

Interesting article,=. Most enlightening is the part where he says that he cannot "give a 100% honest answer" on how he feels about BYU. He says that he "looks back on BYU with fond memories", but we also know that that is not 100% honest - so take that as you will...

In the end the article does a fair job of painting a picture of what we already know. The kid was a head case who could kill it in practice but was unable to bring it in games. No shame it that. I wish him the best moving forward.

Oh, so you're saying he doesn't have "it"?

oh, and couldn't every highly rated high school football player say the same (that had things went differently, they'd be a pro now)?

Isn't it funny how every time Robert Anae leaves BYU with a freshman QB that looks awesome under Anae, the same QB seems to suck under the next Ocoordinator? And yet, Anae is looked at as a horrible coach by most BYU fans. Just a thought.

I don't know whether Anae is looked at as a horrible coach (maybe he is and maybe he isn't) my experience is that most people think that he's a surly churlish brilliant football mind. In other words Norm Chow 2.0

I just remember all the negativity when everyone was blaming him for the 2 qb system with heaps and Neilson in 10 and the outrage when he was rehired again in 12. There is also a poster here who had the signature "Anae is not the guy" the whole time he was coaching. Maybe it is just me or anecdotal evidence but it seems like he was pretty universally hated even though his offenses averaged some of the highest point totals over a season in BYU history. Oh well, like Bronco, he is gone and I am sure everyone hates it when the past is brought up.

Funny thing, I don't see anyone in the comments here or on the DN article linking that experience to the current situation. Seems clear to me from author Jeff Call's prologue that this is part 2 of 2 in a series on freshman QBs at BYU that Call is not in favor of starting another Freshman unless necessary, and definitely not in favor of having a 2 QB system.

I understand why Grimes didn't want to pull the trigger on naming a starting QB. He's the new coach and needs to evaluate all talent, and he didn't have a chance to evaluate Mangum at full strength and in full contact drills. But I'm really hoping that Mangum is healed up enough to compete from the beginning of Fall Camp (he's out running 5Ks in Nebraska after all!), and that Grimes names a starter--likely Mangum--before the first week is out.

Keeping that decision a secret and splitting reps has a far greater opportunity cost on team cohesion, leadership, and QB-Receiver chemistry than any potential strategic advantage over the first opponent that might come from delaying or secreting that decision.

Here's the thing about Anae, when he had a barn full of NFL-caliber players (Max Hall era) he was good. He still made some bone headed calls, though, and his offense was vanilla. Great players made it work.

The moment he lost his talent (Heaps and Riley eras) he sucked. Bottomline, he wasn't a good coach. Heaps is a prime example of that. Yes, Heaps clearly has his own set of mental roadblocks, but a grumpy coach like Anae clearly was unable to help his player get over those issues.

As for Heaps...glad he's learning and growing. That's what this life is about.

Players that looked good under Anae didn't without him. It wasn't just the players, IMO. It was more the bricks in the biggest games against the best opponents. But without him we were bricking against UMass. He was like Bronco- usually pretty good, frustratingly without ever being great. But we haven't sniffed even 'good' much since he left.

I don't think Jake Heaps ever had the leadership skills or winning mentality, or even that much toughness to perform under a competitive circumstance.

And to preserve your self-worth, you just blame others and circumstances.

I love how if a coach is successful when we don't like him we blame the players. Then if a coach that we like sucks, we still blame the players. Funny how that works.

Unfortunately he hit his ceiling early. I think that happens to a lot of the highly rated, touted QBs. They have been so well coached with camps etc. that they have already peaked in high school. But hey, he got his college paid for and has/had (not sure) a cool gig as a backup QB in the NFL. You could do a lot worse.

In terms of the NFL, he was a backup summer camps QB, I think he only ever made the practice squad on a 10 day contract once during the actual NFL season. But still, tossing the ball around in preseason camps isn't a bad way to make a few hundred bucks.

Anae decimated our Oline and TE squad - historically laden with rich, NFL talent - with "Go Fast, Go Hard.". We still haven't recovered from that.

Interestingly enough, when he ran out of Lavell guys, he switched over to a high nitro offense that worked pretty well against junior colleges, and absolutely bricked against teams .550 and above.

I mean, you guys went crazy over Ty's offense not crossing the 50 against LSU, but forgot about BYU posting 13 yards of offense in a half against TCU, and getting throttled year in and year out by Utah and TCU.

Pre Anae, we were all paired up with the SNOT and Horned Frogs, but during his tenure they left us in the dust. Virginia plays as easy of a schedule as we did in the MWC, and there are already rumors of whether or not he'll make it past this year.

UVA writeup. It's like an echo from the past...

This is like trying to compare who has the biggest Chihuahua.

What do Crowton, Anae and Detmer all have in common?

They were the only OCs who laid goose eggs in modern BYU offense history. And at least Crowton had the excuse of a snowstorm (though he did end our reign as holding the longest active streak without a shutout).
