2018-19 Roster/Scholarship situation

If my list is correct, that means they will have 1 too many scholarship players on this roster for the fall. Is there any roster attrition that solves the problem? Does someone get their scholarship pulled and do they stay as a walk-on? Or does Emery have to wait for clearance before being able to join the team officially again?



Looking out to 2019-20 Leifson and Knell will be returning from missions and Shaw and Worthington will expire their eligibility. That year the Senior class would be 9 players deep! They have some recruiting to do.

Joking aside, if I had to cut someone it would be Shaw or Andrus. Two seasons ago Shaw was one of my favorite bench players but we didn't really miss him last season when he was injured. I can't recall how good Andrus is or what his potential is but I think I'd rather some younger players get a scholarship and/or minutes.

In my opinion Emery should give up his scholarship for the year. If he's going to be suspended for 1/3rd of the season anyway, it doesn't make any sense for him to also use a scholarship, he can walk-on for one year.

It is crazy to think that at this point there is only 7 players who are rostered or are committed who would be around for 2020-21. The team will be back to very young again.

Nothing has been confirmed yet, but a rumor going around that I've heard from someone connected to the basketball admin is that if Emery actually decides to come back BYU will voluntarily suspend Emery for 10 or so games for NCAA rule violations. This would hopefully appease the NCAA and half their investigation into the improper benefits he allegedly took and square matters away. If BYU doesn't do this, the NCAA investigation would resume once Emery returns with no guarantee on how it would play out or the timing of any suspension. So this way BYU could suspend him basically before conference play starts and have him back for most of conference.

Agree.

Never going to happen. Emery had opportunities and offers to transfer elsewhere during his time off, but stayed with BYU. For BYU to now pull his schollie would be poor form.



I would be on board with BYU pulling it if they had made that clear to him before he recommitted to BYU, but not at this point.

Seriously, it seems extensive that the NCAA would expect a player, that on his own, withdrew from the season when under scrutiny for alleged improper booster benefits, to then be penalized the subsequent season. Yes, neither the NCAA nor BYU affixed the punishment for Emery to sit out last season, and for Emery there were other personal reasons contributing to his withdraw from the school, but without this situation hanging over his head, I don't know that he would have voluntarily withdrawn.



Am I the only one that believes he pulled out too partly to self-penalize himself and acknowledge his infraction? It's very common these days for college's to self-penalize themselves when an infraction is uncovered, before any official review is handed down by the NCAA in hope that they will view their self-castigation as sufficient for the crime.

Criddle tweeted about the roster situation when Childs announced he was coming back and made a comment that Shaw might be done. I'm not sure if that means his injury could be career ending or what.

I suspect given all that was going on with Emery's life at the time, withdrawing was a very calculated decision.



He withdraws and doesn't have to endure an entire season of the controversy. He already had his fair share of negative attention. He also doesn't have to go through an investigation, at least not while he's on the team.

I imagine the NCAA doesn't see it as a student self-penalizing but more likely a student avoiding the investigation and subsequent punishment. Like a criminal who moves/flees to a country with no extradition. Once they come back, they don't get to count that time against any future punishments.



Now I'm not saying that Emery is guilty or not of breaking NCAA rules, I'm just saying that's probably how the NCAA views it.

The NCAA cares more about impermissible benefits to recruits than it does when it happens to players already on the roster. It was self-reported by BYU and he already sat an entire season. I don't think it will be that big of a deal to the NCAA despite what ute fans are hoping for.
