New Assistant Coach named

Heath Schroyer has now been officially replaced at BYU with the very experienced Lee Cummard.

Lee Cummard!? No offense to Lee, love the guy and he was a great player back in the day, but his coaching experience is a little light. Is Lee really the best we can get?

I'm ok with the hire. Lee actually wants to be a basketball coach. BYU seems to be in mode the last 6 months or so of hiring professional coaches. Too many coaches on the previous football and basketball staffs simply get out of coaching when BYU lets them go. Detmer - not coaching. Cahoon - not coaching. Mahe - not coaching. Nashif - not coaching. Empey - not coaching.



Hire coaches who want to be coaches.

We missed an opportunity to hire somebody from the outside to provide a different perspective. Oh well, hiring from within seems to work for Duke. And we are the Duke of Utah County.

That's a really good point. Cummard has been a grad assistant for a couple of years. It would make sense for him to be able to be promoted at some point. I'm not sure what a typical timeline looks like though.

They replace the disciplinarian with the goofy big brother?

This feels to me a little like when George Bush Senior picked Dan Quayle to be his companion just to prove he could win the Presidency on his own with no VP bump. I say this because going from grad assistant to assistant head coach at BYU makes very little sense. That is unless things are even worse than we know.....

He's just an assistant, not the assistant head coach.
