BYU Basketball Quadrants

This is what the committee would have seen if they had even gone far enough down their list to look at BYU.

I finally got curious enough to goggle who exactly made up this NCAA committee and actually I was very surprised:



Meet the Committee

Bruce Rasmussen

Committee chair and director of athletics at Creighton University

Bruce began service on the committee on September 1, 2013 and will serve as chair of the committee for 2017-18.



Other Committee Members Include:

Bernard Muir, vice chair of committee and director of athletics, Stanford University

Mitch S. Barnhart, director of athletics, University of Kentucky

Tom Burnett, commissioner, Southland Conference

Janet Cone, director of athletics, University of North Carolina at Asheville

Tom Holmoe, director of athletics, Brigham Young University

Jim Phillips, vice president for athletics & recreation, Northwestern University

Jim Schaus, director of athletics, Ohio University

Craig Thompson, commissioner, Mountain West Conference

Kevin White, director of athletics, Duke University



1/2 half represented non-power conferences! Wow, you wouldn't have believed that for the results we saw.



No home cookin -- only 1/2 of the members represented teams that made the NCAA tournament.

The home cooking came when they made the new Quadrant system an official part of the NCAA tournament analysis. Likely half of the P6's conference road games now fall in Quadrant 1.



Under this system, the committee was spoon fed the analysis that a win or loss on the road against Arizona St.(20-12, 8-10, Florida St.(20-11, 9-9), Marquette (20-13, 9-9), or Oklahoma (18-13, 8-10) was just as valuable as a road win or loss against Duke, Kansas, Villanova, or Arizona.



But a road win or loss at Old Dominion (#76 - 25-7, 15-3) or Montana (#78, 24-7, 16-2) wasn't as valuable.



Also, the mid-level P6 road games were worth more to the selection committee than a win at home over Middle Tennessee (#31, 25-7, 16-2), Western Kentucky (#34, 25-10, 14-4), St. Mary's (#39, 29-5, 16-2), or New Mexico St.(#41, 28-5, 12-2).



That's how you get a bunch of P6 teams with 9-9 and 8-10 records into the tournament field...and keep out Saint Mary's, Middle Tennessee, Western Kentucky, and Boise St.

Messed up system.



It wasn't perfect 5 years ago, but it wasn't this broken either. In trying to make it better, they've made it worse.
