Matich on how to pick starting WRs next season

Listening to BYUSN's Monday podcast, Trevor Matich said that next season for the WRs, instead of having tryouts to determine the starters, put 3 WRs in a closet with baseball bats and the one that emerges is the starter. Then do it again and the next one that emerges is the other starter / next on the depth chart.



He also described BYU football as a cheese grater on the eyeball...

He did say both of those. His main point on the receiver thing though, was that the receivers need a bunch more toughness, which is what I have been saying since before cahoon was hired the first time. Holladay was starting to get some out of them by 15 but he was not retained by the current head coach.........

He also said that Detmer's offense would work if it was moderately executed, didn't even have to be executed at a high level.

LCSC is a local college who has won the NAIA Baseball World Series 20 times. Their old head coach used to take the team, in the pre-season, to a local boxing gym to work out with a guy who is now a former pro boxer (had been 3rd in the World as a Lightweight). And they boxed. The players got taught how and worked out, and the reward at the end was a sparring session with the former pro. Someone once asked the coach WHY he did that. He said, I can't really explain it, but when we box, we win. It actually is a GREAT way to read players, who will step up in a tight spot, who will fade and run .. it builds toughness. Maybe Kalani needs to take the team to the boxing gym. ... it "beats" closets and baseball bats.

I once taught a kid that became a 2 time national heavyweight champion wrestler for Bob Christianson at Ricks. He told me football players weren't so tough. If that was true then it sure is now. It isn't just the wide receivers that need it either.



As far as boxing goes, Gene Fullmer was middleweight champion and both his brothers were contenders. They are gone now but there ought to be someone around. By the way Gene is probably the only person to ever beat Sugar Ray Robinson twice out of 4 fights and one was a draw.

Makes more sense than water slides, rafting trips, and movie nights.

My wife is related to Gene Fullmer, a great uncle or something like that. Was a great fighter.

I wrestled throughout middle and high school, and the toughness of every one-on-one bout felt real. You beat the guy across from you, or you lose.



Receivers have lost a lot this year. On specific plays, maybe sometimes you can teach it. But really, whatever route, or cut, or hand movement, or jump, or whatever...you have to beat the other guy. You have to be tougher and better at all those things.



I think with receivers can see it more easily. Let's find another Jordan Leslie this off season. Receivers got to get better.

Maybe we should hire a former wrestler to be our receivers coach.

I was a wrestler in HS. We had a drill where the coach taught us to be aggressive. He out two guys on the mat and the wrestlers had 10 seconds to through the other guy off the mat. If neither got the other guy off the mat, both did extra burpees.
