Also interesting that the Pac 10 has no ranked teams and they only received 6 votes. The MWC received 315 votes, with UNM and UNLV just outside the top 25 and SDSU picking up a vote.

i'm guessing that's our FB record they confused for us LOL.also they show us moving up from # 20 last week which is also incorrect.we were #23 in the coaches last week.kind of a backhanded compliment?

This is huge, but as usual, what happens on the court is what counts, we can be ranked in the top ten, that still doesn't (though more likely) win us a tourney game. I love high BYU rankings, both football (especially) and mens basketball, I am just a little worried about the raised expectations and the added pressure...

Lunardi has BYU as a 5 seed in the most recent bracketology.

not to get greedy,but note the difference between a 4 and 5 seed in that particular speculative bracket.as a 5 seed we play in the dreaded upset-prone 5/12 game vs. OSU,whereas as a 4 seed we play La.-Tech;now granted the potential for upset vs. La. Tech is still present,but that seems like a more winnable game.maybe we'll be playing so well by then that it won't matter,but I'd like a 4 seed or better.

Exactly and that's what benefit this ranking garbage is--a necessary evil--is to get us the highest seeding we can get, which equates to a better first round matchup. Even though the placement committee is not bound whatsoever by poll rankings (just ask USU who was in the Top 25 a few years ago and couldn't even get an at-large bid), it does put a bit (however minimal) of pressure on them to make sure that rankings do reflect in seedings. Staying in the top 25 gives us visability we don't have otherwise.

That's my hope--a seeding no lower than a 4. If we only have two more losses this season, that is doable, depending on who, where and when we lose another game. We win throughout, anything less than a four would be a significant insult because it would be very hard for us at that point to not at least be in the top 8 in the nation.

Hmmm...I would love a 4 or 3 seed and hope we get such; however, history tells us that BYU's seed will be whatever we deserve +2. We crack the top ten, win the Las Vegas Invitational and pick up only a couple more losses, then yes we'll be deserving of no less than a 4 seed and possibly a 3 seed. Realistically, though, we'll get a 5 or 6 seed.

Unfortunately, BYU has a reputation as of late of losing NCAA tourney games, which doesn't help us any come selection time.

I tend to agree with you. It's a long season and it's not easy to win on the road anywhere.

However, this is the 1st top 20 team at BYU since 87-88- there is some reason for optimism.

Steve Fisher is an artist when it comes to new and exciting ways to take a NCAA tourny team each new season and get them into the NIT...

kiwi,i know its tough to keep comin' back and being optimistic when the Cougs have dissapointed so consistently for so long come tourney time,but i think their has been a sea change this year.some reasons for optimism,#1they're winning road games and in most cases stomping teams in the proccess.#2 they have some talented and very poised freshmen who come to us with a whole new attitude,and seemed to have really picked up the old veterans who've experienced the painful end of the year losses during their careers,#3 is the emergence of some defensive stoppers like Jackson and Charles,who have the ability to guard effectively during crunch time,#4 the emergence of the Noah/JT combination,with Hartsock providing steady post defense,offensive rebounds due to his mobility and some nice scoring when needed,and then JT being able to now provide much needed spark off the bench.i for one think we're much more likely to take the step to the next level this year.i think being the #1 FT shooting team in the country will not hurt us as well.in a close game this advantage will be the difference.
