I've finally caved-let's follow the BSU formula for success

1. Schedule a challenging game for opening day, with months and months of prep time.

2. Play in a BCS game (by doing #3 below) and have 6 weeks to come up with and implement a great game plan.

3. Fill the space in between with crap and fluff while the future BCS opponent plays teams each week that deserve honest preparation.

This is basically what we did this year with OU and OSU, minus, of course and most vital, #3.

Flame all you want, but this is exactly what BSU does.

you sir are a Heretic.

EDIT*** I see now that you were actually agreeing with BSU's strategy, not making fun of having a watered down schedule. Ignore what I posted above, and most everything else I say around here.

Don't forget recruit every tom dick and harry from the juco ranks that hasn't either murdered someone or eaten their young.

We can't follow BSUs formula, because we can't recruit the same athletes.

Bronco won't do it because he wants to win a title, not just go to a BCS game. Besides, how does BYU get out of playing top 25 conference members TCU and :utard:??? It's easier for BSU since there is no other competition in the WAC like there is in the MWC. ;)

I understand your point, but some of you are acting like its BSU's fault their conference sucks.

Prior to the Fiesta Bowl, I would be nodding your head and agreeing that the Broncos were untested and the Oregon game was the only real challenge they had faced up until then (since that actually was the case). But I can't criticize a team that a) rises to the challenges they're given and b) honestly seeks to improve their strength of schedule, which they seem to be doing by courting a conference change and booking teams like OSU and VT for next year. I may wish that BSU had to face more challenges throughout the year, but I really can't say that BSU is undeserving of any accolades they've received this decade based on actual performance.

Really, some of the bitterness on this board befuddles me. I wish BYU had BSU's two BCS successes, but I'm not going to hate them for it. And besides, while I agree that MWC > WAC times a million, some of these arguments are starting to sound like the stuff that AQ people say to non-AQ people.

You're absolutely correct about BSU's formula for pretending to be a success!

But NO, I do NOT want BYU to be a poser. We play in a real conference, one that is better than half the BCS conferences, at the very least, and we would be the laughingstock of the D1 Football world if we did what BSU does. I would rather get a national championship once every decade and BCS bowls 3-4 x a decade (minimum), which I what I believe we're going to start seeing with Bronco Mendenhall going forward.

Yes, I honestly believe that BYU has not only been returned to where we once were, but we've shown that we're capable of making real progress toward becoming a legitimate elite team, and a perennial national title contender, and that might come within the next 3-5 years!

Just watch. I know this season was a disappointment, by some standards, since Bronco has raised expectations so stratospherically high, but it was, IMHO, a success, just not as complete and profound a success as I would have preferred.

But just watch. You'll see BYU in a BCS bowl for at least two consecutive seasons, and a second national championship, before 2016!

It IS BSU's fault they are in a conference that sucks. But they now have a chance to jump to a Mwcuch better one!

Sorry, but the difference between BYU and Boise State is that they're good enough to beat "fluff" like Tulsa on the road while we're not.

Yes, because a one-score victory over 5-7 fluff Tulsa in 2009 is directly comparable to a one-score loss to 10-4 "fluff" Tulsa in 2007.

When was the last time Boise State lost to a non-conference non-BCS opponent in the regular season then? Or looking at our terrible home game against Florida State, when was the last time Boise State lost a regular season home game against a BCS opponent? Yeah, we're simply not as good as they are, no matter how we schedule.

Florida and Alabama are better too. And I'd rather follow their route to success. BSU cherry picks 1 PAC10 team per year, typically an Oregon school, and gives itself all year to prep for it. Like we had with OU. Easier to get upsets with all that prep time. Until BSU has to play tough games throughout the year--like they do in 2010--I will withhold judgment. That trip to DC to play VT will tell us a lot about BSU next year. Same with the home game v. what will be a very good Oregon State team. And hopefully, the WAC improves, so 2010, in my mind, will be the year BSU has a chance to show if they really have it to compete with a tougher schedule throughout the whole year. If they run it in 2010, color me impressed.

I think 2011, with a mix of home and road games vs. BYU, TCU, Utah, AFA and which ever BCS team they play the first week of the season, will be the most telling.

Tell us more than them beating TCU, which a bunch of us thought was the best team in the country?

Well, they're technically a BCS team, but BSU lost to a 4-win Washington team just two years ago.

BSU, Utah, and to a slightly lesser extent, TCU and Hawaii all have followed that formula to a degree of success that exceeds BYU. UH failed to show anything in the BCS bowl, but even in losing, TCU showed well. BSU and Utah won both times. Until the BCS is either changed or gone, that is how the ballgame is played and it is stupid to go against the grain of it. It is especially foolish to take road trips from the Rocky Mountains to the East Coast and expect to win very often. BSU, like Utah, and BYU of old, has let success go to their heads and will schedule up and lose an extra game or two for doing it. I guess Hawaii did too. That season opener at Florida after their Sugar Bowl year - well it was stupid to travel half-way around the world to play any game and especially that game.

I hope BYU survives FSU on the road next year and that BSU survives its road trip. MWC teams have all of the tough games they need in-conference and should schedule winnable, regional games and get an extra home game or two like Florida and Bama, etc.

What the MWC really needs to fix is the misperception that the bottom is weak. Adding more top teams like BSU (unless we add 2 avg teams too and go to two divisions) will not help that misperception. It will make them look worse at the bottom.

What needs to happen is this: Wyoming, NM, CSU, UNLV, and SDSU need to stop playing rollover games for PAC 10, BIg 12, Big 10, SEC, etc. They should play winnable games, fatten up their records, and become bowl eligible, and surprise someone like Wyoming did this year. And, if Air Force can figure out how to kick Navy's crap, the MWC would be demonstrating that it is competitive top-to-bottom.

Right when we have the BCS reeling, Utah, with a better team in 2010, feels like it needs to start losing to Notre Dame and a few others, BYU feels like it needs to roll over for a road game to FSU, and BSU (the WAC BCS Killer) wants to give up an automatic loss or two. I lose track of what TCU has planned for next year. But it seems that only TCU, unless SMU or Houston do something, has much of a shot at busting the BCS. How much noise will the MWC make if TCU loses a couple, Utah loses 3 or 4, BYU loses 4 or 5, and AFA loses 4 or 5 and the bottom is - still the bottom.

Utah, BYU, and BSU should pull a Nevada, back out of a game or 2, and pick up a home game against someone from the hood.

Anyway - let's hope we have a QB ready to go. We are loaded with talent and lacking in experience. Let's hope Unga stays. Let's hope the O/L is healthy. Let's hope Chambers is learning and Jacobsen is healthy. Let's hope we can find some tight ends that can step in without a complete fallout. Let's hope the Defense and Special Teams continue to improve. It will take a team effort to thrive in 2010. Let's hope the coaches have been learning, too. When not being outcoached, and while being healthy, we were pretty good last year. Ask Oregon State. Even with key injuries, we gave Oklahoma all they wanted and a bit more. We also beat very good Utah and AFA teams. We exceeded my expectations in 2009. I hope we exceed them again in 2010.

Go Cougs.

Kudos to BSU. TCU came up a bit short - I wish they had not. Kudos to our Cougs. Kudos to the Utes and Falcons and Cowboys. The MWC and their little sister WAC had a good year. I say - leave BSU in the WAC, unless we pick up two more teams and go to two divisions and add a championship game. If we go that route - bring em on.

For sure. Traveling east--2 timezones--is very brutal. BYU rarely wins in that time zone. Look at the NFL, where teams traveling 2 or more zones pretty much NEVER win. Plus, while the game may not be in Blacksburg, but it is a virtual home game for VT in DC. So it is a real roadie for BSU, where they travel 2 time zones and play in a stadium that is not neutral, but really a home VT crowd. Plus, most have VT ranked as #5 or #6 next year, so they will be really good. Add to it that it is a midseason game, so BSU will have days--not weeks--to prep, and I think it is a tougher game than TCU or OU in the Fiesta Bowl games.

Personally what Boise has done can hardly be considered a success, more like status qou. Yes, their football accomplishments are a success, but what they've done in the BCS system is still failure. Look at it this way, Boise is like 25-1 over the last two years. If BYU had gone 12-0 last year, and did not make it to a BCS game (Boise didn't last year) I'd be pissed. And then if BYU went 13-0 this year and did not make it to a title game, then I'd be even more pissed.

The end goal is not making it to a BCS game or even winning a BCS game. The end goal is a title or even a chance to play for the title. Boise has zero chance of making it to a title game with their schedule, BYU should never follow in that path.

Six times non-BCS have made it to a BCS game. Six times they've been undefeated. Six times they've been secluded from a chance at a championship. If BYU did exactly what Boise has done, it will not just be six times, but sixty times. Boise's path is apologetic to the BCS system. BYU's path will truly bust the system as BYU continues to make their schedule as difficult as possible- no cake walks.

Would you consider New Mexico, SDSU, CSU, Utah State, Tulane and Wyoming formidable foes? I think the majority of college football fans would consider games of this caliber cake walks....Its not like BYU is running some sort of gauntlet of elite teams. Lets be honest with ourselves.

Us little guys are never going to play for a title the way the system is set up, and its tough to fault BSU for achieving the maximum possible success they can, (especially when their schedule is very comparable to ours..)

Its fun to dream about the idea that BYU would have been in the national championship game this year had we gone undefeated, but the fact is, TCU not being in the title game proves that an undefeated BYU would have also been shut out of the title game. The reality of our schedule is that we play a couple of good teams, but also play some of the worst teams in D1 football for much of the conference schedule.

There will never be an non-AQ team that gets into the title game over an undefeated AQ team, or possible a one loss AQ team. Thats the system we play in. We just need to go about our business and win. Everything else will fall into place once we can do that.
