NFL Draft: Max Hall

While I think Max Hall the best BYU QB of the decade and a top three QB (behind Jim McMahon and Ty Detmer), I don't think he is an NFL QB in any way, shape or form.

No. Because John Beck at least has an "NFL caliber" arm. Hall does not.

Considering most NFL teams carry 3 QB's, I'd say Max has a shot to land on a roster and earn a fat check riding pine. He has John Beck capabilities in that regard. Of course, I thought Sark and Walsh would at least land on a roster too and did not, so who knows.

Typically, the only way quarterbacks without big-time arms or the desired size make it in the NFL is if they are excellent at reading defenses and a high level pocket presence. Detmer stuck around the league for 14 years with those two attributes as his prime qualifications. Of course, Detmer was unusually gifted in both of those areas.



I think Max has talents in both of those areas - as well as his ability to thread the needle inside 30 yards. His ability to throw into coverage really is a strength that occasionally got him into trouble. The only thing I have seen in Max that I would consider to be a weakness are deep streak patterns...they always seem to be underthrown.



That being said...I think Max has a legitimate chance of getting drafted in the late rounds.

Former CSU quarterback Caleb Hanie made an NFL roster. I think he was the No. 2 QB with the Bears. Is he better than Max? I don't think so. Max has a definite shot to make a roster.

I know Max is the winningest QB of all Cougar time, but don't you think Beck's Senior year he was head and shoulders above Max?



Beck was like an unstoppable QB robot from the TCU game on his Senior year. He was amazing. His accuracy, arm strength and ability to read defenses was unstoppable (and in my opinion better than Max in all 3 areas).



If I were creating my all-decade team I'd have John Beck as my QB.



The Dolphins drafted Beck to be their next franchise QB. It didn't work out that way, but it did start that way. Nobody will look at Max so favorably -- ever.

Hall had the benefit of a stable coaching staff and better team talent than what Beck had his first three years and even his senior year.



Hall had a great college career, but he's no Beck and certainly no Detmer. If he sticks to an NFL roster it would be a surprise to me.

I will be mildly surprised, but you never know. I agree that Hall isn't as good as Beck was at the end, but who knows? Perhaps Max will peak at the Combine and go on to make $$?



Seriously, I will be mildly surprised, but if he makes it, CONGRATULATIONS! And we'll all be praising him if he ends up getting and then doing something great with playing time. It's interesting how our opinion of BYU QBs is so heavily influenced by their NFL careers, isn't it?

I think Max will never be a franchise QB. I think all NFL teams need a solid back-up QB. It's critical for any team making a play-off run. Max could do well in that roll. His strength is his work ethic & ability to read defenses. I think Max has a shot @ a late round. Once in, I think he'll "make his bones" & hang around a while. We shall see. Draft day can have surprises.

I think you guys might be being a tad bit harsh, Hall did finish with the #4 passer rating in the country on the #12 team in the country. He may not have the strongest arm, but I can think of about a dozen NFL teams whose qbs are subpar in that department.

Wasn't intended to be an insult. Was simply showing that his NFL prospects are not terribly hot.



Thread title = Max Hall, NFL Draft.



Post I was replying to insinuated that plenty of NFL teams would want him because of his pass efficiency and the fact that he led a #12 team.
