It means we're coming up on the end of our 8 year deal with ESPN so BYU has been actively pursuing an extension to that contract. This is goo news.

The existing contract runs through 2018 with an option for ESPN to extend it through 2019. It is about that time that negotiations for the next contract should start sometime this year.

Sounds like we should have renegotiated in 2015 or 2016 while ESPN was throwing money at football teams/conferences.

I wonder if another large network (FOX) would be willing to get in a bidding war with ESPN for BYU. Could make things a little more fun.

Holmoe's comments in those articles don't sound like he is out trying to bid networks against each other for BYU's contract. He sounded pretty committed to ESPN as a partner.

This makes the most sense. ESPN has a relationship with every P5 conference. That is not the case with Fox, or any other network. We often use ESPN to meet our scheduling needs.

Who else is (1) going to put as much $$ in BYU's pockets, and (2) give them the exposure that BYU wants more than $$?

Will Fox, NBCSN, CBSCS, Comcast, or anyone else deliver the same amount of nationally broadcast games and help facilitate big games at neutral sites?

I have a hard time seeing any other broadcast partner who brings everything to the table that ESPN does.

I think the next contract will be more lucrative than the first, but not as eye-popping as we might have hoped for a couple years ago.
